stroller insight

Post by Chucky » Tue Apr 08, 2008 3:04 pm

Can you guys and gals shed some light on the stroller price increase? The jump in stroller pricing is causing quite the uproar over on another Disney board that I frequent. People claiming that Disney is trying to get kids to exercize more, people thinking it is to make more room for people in the parks, to plain corporate greed causing the hike in stroller prices. It is amazing how something like a hike in stroller prices can cause people to turn on each other. :( What do you think is the reason?

I guess they don't think that the cost increases over time like other things?

I would imagine that the cost of upkeep and cleaning them on a daily basis is very high! Not to mention that replacing parts or repair for damaged ones from SG's!

Yeah, but the cost of the strollers doubled, from $16 for a double to $32. That's a HEFTY increase. The main reason as told by the powers that be (whomever they are) was availability. It was costing tons in labor and upkeep to keep up with the quantity of strollers being rented on a daily basis. They also commented that so many guests were renting strollers only to carry belongings, and the price increase was partially to discourage that practice and keep strollers available for those who actually needed them for children. I suspect the other reasons (cutting back on stroller rentals to avoid the overcrowding that occurs and demand allowing them to get pretty much as much money for them as they want to charge) also figure into it, although I don't think you'll hear them officially spoken. My fear is that the added cost of strollers will drive parents to rent wheelchairs for their kids since those did not increase. This will make wheelchair availability a problem, and/or will cause Disney to raise the price of those as well.

Most of the uproar is over the double strollers. A $13 increase from $18 to $31 does seem a bit extreme, like something else must be behind them raising the prices, not just a simple increase for upkeep. I know that when I am at Disney World next month (yay!) I will be only renting a single stroller, not a double like I would have before the price increase.

The market will dictate the price. If sales drop off at the higher price it'll be reduced. If sales stay the same then the demand is there and the price will hold or be increased again.

that's not the per day rate is it????

I'm so glad I rent my wheelchair from an off property provider. I think that the availability will tank now that those strollers are out of the reach of a lot of families. Yikes.

Yes, it is. The single stroller and ECV rental prices went up by a little bit but double strollers went up a LOT. I found out about the increase a few days before, the managers called a meeting at the end of the night in part to let us know of the increase so we'll be prepared. We're the first people guests see after coming through the train station so chances are people will bitch at us about it.

Straight from the Hub:

ECV Rental

$45 per day, plus a $20 refundable deposit (Downtown Disney requires a $100 refundable credit card deposit)

Single Stroller Rental

$15 per day, with no deposit

Length-of-Stay Single Stroller Rental

$13 per day

Double Stroller Rental

$31 per day, with no deposit

Length-of-Stay Double Stroller Rental

$27 per day

this price increase is good and bad for us in Strollerland err... Fantasyland. Because of the price increase there (in theory) should be less strollers, especially less doubles being used as shopping carts. However, with them being so expensive and the mentality of SGs there will be more upset guests screaming at stroller parking CMs when their stroller gets moved or "lost". But perhaps with the costs being so high, they will actually read the terms and agreement of stroller rental-- oh, who am I kidding, they don't even read the back of a $72 park ticket.
