I don't know why the guy in the story was so upset - membership is a privilege - not a right. And personally, if I was a corporate president paying the big bucks every year to entertain my most important clients, I would not want some ill-mannered, poorly dressed everyman sitting at the table next to mine gawking at everything around the room. Club 33 is like a country club or a yacht club, not a meeting room for Disneyana fanatics. I have been fortunate enough to go up there once, but it's not a place for the unwashed masses to chill. I shudder to imagine what it would be like if some of the more uncouth passholes were to find their way up there.

I mean, that little story near the end about Walt replacing the boy's wallet and putting his own money in it was sweet, but it had nothing to do with the issue at hand. There's this myth that the U.S. is a "classless" society, but it's not the truth. And as I long ago worked in a commercial bank, dealing with people worth millions of dollars and sometimes going to said yacht clubs and country clubs, I can tell you the upper classes are more than willing to pay the big bucks to not have to mingle with the rest of us. That's the irony of Club 33 - having this exclusive club in the most proletarian of settings.

Weeeellllll, there's yacht clubs and then there's YACHT CLUBS. I belong to one that could be the Maui version of Cheers. I've been in the St. Francis YC in San Francisco where, just inside the front door, is a trophy case containing some of the biggest trophies I've ever seen and a bunch of Olympic medals. It goes up hill from there. Club 33 is a SFYC kinda joint.

The funny part is most of the SFYC members don't sail. They're there to see and be seen. I was asked to join because I had race committee experience but when I found out the annual dues would cover college tuition for a couple of years I declined their offer.

I remember when I used to sail on the Columbia near Portland, there was a yacht club just a short way down the river from where the boats we sailed were kept, there was a yacht club. You never saw anyone going in or coming out, but occasionally you would see a couple sipping wine from their boat on the dock. I had just one thought: What's the point of that?

That reminds me of when I was taking sailing lessons for the basic certification. I heard this slapping sound from about eighty feet off starboard, and saw what looked like a salmon jumping out of the water at a bald eagle, flopping into the water on its side. Then, upon further inspection, I realized the salmon was being used as a bat by a young seal. As the seal was swinging the salmon at the bald eagle, the bald eagle was trying to catch the salmon in its talons. All animals in this confrontation are considered endangered or threatened. Since I am politically conservative, I am not sure for which animal I am supposed to hope a favorable outcome. Either way, for the salmon, that looked like one hell of a way to die.

I don't have to imagine it. I can remember it.

On my last visit to Club 33, everyone at the next table was wearing shorts, and the man never took off his ball cap. One of his kids demanded a cheeseburger, which wasn't on the menu. Their server graciously offered to go downstairs and get him one from another restaurant, "But the $35 minimum charge for lunch will still apply." The other kids kept dropping silver on the floor, but lucky for them they didn't start wandering the restaurant.

I don't think I'd have even *tried* to keep SWMBO from tossing them out the window.

Apparently, it now takes more than just money to keep out the riff-raff. :(

I would suggest googling videos and images at google or other sites. I saw people in shorts, unwashed hair, shorts, t-shirts, and who did not look like they were dining in a high class joint. They look like tourists who are eating at the Rockett Rod's or the Bengal Barbecue.

I'd love to visit club 33, I'd even dress appropriately and try and keep my 2 year old under control (as we always do when eating out!)

Well since the link only comes up blank,my idea of "A Longer Wait Then Nemo" would be. CMs get a 'decent' raise.(how's that for a wait?) :(

That sounds about right I had no problems with the link, but then again I'm a registered user of the Los Angeles Times web site. Maybe if you register (it's free) you can read the story?????
