Just to let y'all know, the theme parks aren't the only ones getting the idiot visitors. I was sitting in the break room at the Getty Villa waiting to start my shift yesterday when another one of the girls came in and shared this jem from her morning tour.
For those of you who don't know, the Villa is a museum that is a copy of an old Roman period home, the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, Italy - one of the towns that was innundated by Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79.
So Berri is doing her thing, telling her guests about Vesuvius, the original villa, etc., and she notes that there is a group of about 5 women who aren't paying any attention, spending more time talking to each other. She shrugged it off. At the end of your tours, you're supposed to ask your guests if they have any questions before they go off to explore the museum on their own, so one of these women who hadn't been paying any attention goes up to her and says, "o.k. so this was built on top of where the volcano exploded and you're excavating underground?"
