And now, a report from the field covering Day 9 of the action…

There’s a spring in Orange’s step today, and it’s not just the vitamin C! We peeled back the layers and found Orange has a soft spot for defying gravity. “Golf was just my warm-up,” Orange explains. “Wait until you see how sweet I am on the fly.”

This is one pulp that sure ain’t fiction. Orange was born to bounce and is destined to squeeze out a win!

And now, a report from the field covering the scene on Day 10...

The athletes have hit a fruitful stride on Day 10 of the competition, but today we’re kicking it over to the familial forces who hold it all together behind-the-stands. Bunches upon bunches of friend pods, budding seedlings and even entire family trees excitedly gather to root for their loved ones in the limelight. Fig, fig, hooray! Watermelon’s little sprouts do the wave while Coconut’s cousins go totally…nuts—“I wouldn’t be here without them,” waxes a choked-up Coconut, “My family is the apple of my eye.”

As we enter the arena today, we see Raspberry warming up for the weightlifting event. This little fruit is pure concentrate as the fans fall silent to watch it lift 10x its weight. Raspberry breathes in and blows out noisily through its mouth, in a signature noise recognized by fans everywhere as "The Raspberry." When we spoke to Raspberry earlier today, it had this to say: "It's all about the breathing to keep my legs from turning to jelly." With confidence like that, it's a sher-bet that it will be Gold for Raspberry this year!

A strong wind has picked up near the diving pool but Plum won’t be pickled. Just look at that sweet form off the diving board! Plum floats back to the surface, steps out of the water...and immediately prunes up! Now that’s what I call fast-drying fiber. A tart ending for the Fruit Games vet, but one heck of a performance.

This may be the sweetest crossover the Fruit Games have ever seen. Pear's ball-handling skills stem from years of practice in a sunny corner of the orchard. The nearby buds would cheer from their trees as perfectly placed shots fell into the fruit basket. "I had big, juicy dreams back then," said Pear, "and now they're all blossoming!"

Don't let the green ap-pear-ance fool you: Pear is ripe and ready to leaf it all on the court!

It's pits against seeds as Lychee takes its place across the volleyball net from Fig. The game is on, and it's clear that Fig will leaf no ball behind. Lychee turns briefly to jelly, but recovers quickly. Lychee spikes the ball, but Fig isn't pudding itself down for the count just yet. One more delicious volley and Fig is in quite the jam! In one of the freshest moves we've seen on the beach, Lychee tips the ball over the net once more. Fig is hung out to dry and Lychee savors Gold with this sweet success.

To Be'Ab 2016

An ancient Jewish holiday that’s been revived in modern-day Israel (and pockets of America), Tu B’Av began as a joyous matchmaking day before falling into near-obscurity for almost 19 centuries. In recent times, it’s been reclaimed as a holiday similar to Valentine’s Day and is considered an auspicious day for weddings or marriage proposals.

On this day of love, some women dress in white, much as they did in the second century, when they took part in a courtship dance in the vineyards. Many lovebirds will exchange flowers and chocolates, celebrate in Israel’s restaurants and bars or attend love-themed parties.

Today’s Doodle captures the romantic spirit of of Tu B’Av, which falls on the 15th day of the Hebrew month Av, and begins at sundown on Thursday, August 18th, the night of the full moon.

The crowd falls silent as Durian takes the horse. “You either love ‘em or you can’t stand ‘em,” says one audience member. Popularity aside, this complex fruit brings some stiff competition, moving through the first half of the routine with savory swing. Tight turns and a steady tempo—this is definitely not Durian’s first rodeo. But is this king of fruits all it’s chalked up to be? Wait for it...woah! What a handle on that husk. Going, going, and Durian sticks the dismount without a thorn out of place. Ladies and gentlemen, this fruit just gave “in season” a whole new meaning. Ah, the sweet, strange smell of victory

Today, the sun sets on the 2016 Doodle Fruit Games. And just in time! Our competitors are plum-tuckered from slicing, dicing, rolling, and peeling.

But what a highlight reel! Lemons dropped, Apples bobbed, Strawberries fielded, and the crowd left satisfied. “I’ve been attending the Fruit Games for two decades and I’ve never seen one this jam-packed!” attested Peach, a cobbler from Sauceton. “You could pretty much pick any fruit from the bunch for MVF.”

Ah, parting is such sweet sorrow! But don’t let your melon-choly get the best of you. Take a look back at some of the most appealing moments of this year’s Fruit Games.

Day 1 - Welcome to the Fruit Games
Day 2 - Pineapple serves
Day 3 - Grape hops along
Day 4 - Lemon swims laps
Day 5 - Orange goes putting
Day 6 - Apple tosses goals
Day 7 - Coconut catches air
Day 8 - The running of the Fruit
Day 9 - Orange bounces on the trampoline
Day 10 - Watermelon feels the love
Day 11 - Raspberry lifts weights
Day 12 - Plum takes a dive
Day 13 - Pear shoots hoops
Day 14 - Lychee and Fig play volleyball
Day 15 - Durian wins pommel horse
Day 16 - Grapes compete in table tennis

Until next time, fruit fans!
