Fire Update

It's now jumped the highway and is threatening the main power plant for the island. Crews and helicopters with buckets have been pulled of the main fire to protect the power plant.

Meanwhile the main fire has spread to over 2,000 acres.

One way traffic is being allowed over the back road through Kahakuloa. It's a one lane road that is in very poor condition with sheer cliffs down to the water. If the tourists weren't sober when they started they sure will be when they get through. The back way.

The news is better this morning. The winds have died and the highway is open for one way traffic.

It's gonna be a hot summer.

This is not a happy post. It's about 2:15 AM and I can't sleep.

My wife and I were taken to dinner by a friend who wanted to show his gratitude for us helping him through a rough patch. When we left the house about 6 PM all was good. When we returned we noticed Scooter, the little goofball pictured below, was walking funny. We took both dogs out for their bed time potty. The other pooch did her business but Scoot just stood watching.

We took them both upstairs and noticed Scooter was showing some signs of distress. Panting, warm to the touch, and unable to settle down and go to sleep. We decided to call the vet.

It took almost an hour to finally connect with one. He lives on the other side of the island and said it would take about 40 minutes to drive to his office.

By now Scooter has a rapid pulse, panting very heavy, and her body was very stiff. We left to drive to the vet's office. On the way there she had a seizure. It was horrible to be holding her and being unable to do anything to help. We set the air conditioner at North Pole to cool her down. That seemed to help.

The vet arrived about ten minutes after we did. Based on previous experience he feels she probably got hold of a toad. She's got an IV set, put some meds in her and he was going to give her a sedative to quiet her down.

He told us to leave as there was nothing else we could do tonight. He's going to do some blood work and stay with her until she's comfortable.

My wife is upstairs sobbing. I'm trying to be objective about it all but I'm really scared for my little buddy. It's amazing how a little twelve pound nut who is the happiest creature I've ever known can have such an effect on a tough guy like me.

Hobie,
I know I'm new and all, but I know how hard it is to see a pet fall ill. They are the only things in our lives that can show us unconditional love. I hope Scooter feels better soon, and I hope you and your wife are okay as well.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts.

We just got back from the vet. She's doing much better. Her temp is down, she's not panting, and even though she's on meds, she did recognize us. She does have tremors but once the crap in her system is gone they should subside.

I could tell by the way she was looking at me that all she wanted was to go home.

The vet said it might take up to 48 hours for her system to clear. The bad news is there might be a chance of organ damage.
