Squat toilets are common in China and caused a bit of a snafu with the planning for the Olympics. They didn't realize when they were constructing the stadiums that most of the industrialized world is not used to squat toilets and considers them unhygienic and had to go through and replace them.

Yeah, the first time I went to France, I was nine and slightly shocked to see the hole-in-one bathroom concept. I do believe my initial opinion of it was "ewwwwww"

I've heard arguments from both sides on hygiene of squat toilets... If you think about it, no matter the strategy [aiming or sitting] it's a pretty nasty affair. :D:
