Geez, I remember that time of life. I went from being a soloist that could have had a promising career, to a point where I sound good talking, but DEFINITELY not singing.

Wallaby, recently I was looking over some pics from our family's last WDW trip and came across the ones with you as our safari driver! Good times, good times. I am having trouble imagining you as a singing safari driver, though.

If Disney had a international exchange program he could have been a singing gondolier.

No. I couldn't. Not after my voice cracked that first time.

Just curious, don't mean to pry... Okay, I definitely am trying to pry -- but did your voice really turn "bad," or did the cracking incident just make you reluctant to sing? All of us male-type singers have voice-cracking episodes at puberty, but I've never heard a voice go from glorious to horrifying.

Regardless, BW, be grateful no one resorted to the old-style methods of keeping your pure, high solo voice intact. Castrati, anyone?

You could even ask my parents. Basically, I had taken about three months off of singing in any sort of show or presentation, and when I came back and started practice the director told me in no uncertain terms that I would not be a good fit for the part. I had been practicing to myself, but no one else heard it as I went downhill. No, my voice really did go from awesome to horrible for singing. It's speaking only for me when I am in public, or near anyone who values their ears. My only hope is an African choir that would cover me over like I wasn't there.

And to be clear, I LOVE African music.

The tragedy of the practice of castrating young boys is that so many had it forced on them when they really had no singing talent whatsoever. But since castrati could earn a buttload of money, some poor parents--as in impoverished--had it done. The only advantage to being castrated was, if done before age 12, was it would prevent baldness. Alas, it was a double-edged sword, as they would be unable to continue the family line as well. Can you imagine how many families ceased to exist because they castrated all their sons in an effort to improve their financial condition?
