I don't care if people use cell phones in the parks as long as they are respectful to other people. Sometimes I take my cell phone with me to the park, but I don't use it that much. Also I always make sure that I am respectful to other people.

Today, I had a guest in the front row who, about three quarters through the safari, made or took a call. He made it clear that I was interrupting, and it sounded important, so I let him do his thing. Finally, his daughter started getting really embarrassed and started quietly screaming at him. Sorry, but he was messing up my spiels. Several things that I say start out similarly to another part of the spiel, and at times I was getting tripped up. I don't know why, but I can tune out the radio unless I hear my truck number, but when it's a guest in the front row... it just doesn't work for me.

Just whack him like you do to your radio. It works on it.

Wallaby you need to get creative. We have to stop the ride as an important call has just come in then hold you mike as close to him as possible. Since the call was so important as for you to stop then you should inform other guests of the great important news.

Radios are chatter.
People on the phone are targets for easedropping and listening so we naturally have to focus on the idiot on the cell phone.

Usually, if someone started talking on the phone while on my safari, I'd comment "Wow, I wish I got cell phone reception in Africa ... who's your carrier?" If that didn't work, I'd just start talking a little louder, then a little louder, etc ... the phone-talker would also start talking louder, to be heard over my mic ... and then, without warning, I'd stop, mid sentence, and they're yelling into the phone for the whole truck to hear. Usually worked pretty well

i don't know if this has been mentioned (since i haven't read through this whole thread and i don't have the time to do that now, unfortunately), but i have the theory that some people just can't stand to be "alone" for any amount of time, so they reach for their cell phone...no matter where they are  ...but that's just my opinion

And a valid opinion it is, Elena. ;) Besides, it makes them feel wanted and important to know that everyone is aware that THEY are talking to someone on the phone that NOBODY around them knows (or cares about).

No no, I agree with you completely. I feel like my cell phone keeps me from being alone as well, especially since most of my family and friends are still in Wisconsin so this is a main way for me to stay in contact with them.

Yeah, we've really turned to our cell phones to disconnect from the world around us. I'm on the 7th floor of my dorm and everyone whips out their cell phone to avoid the awkward stare-a-thon while waiting.

I just went to Disneyland on Thursday all by my lonesome, so the 40 minute line for Space was grueling. I pulled out my phone, but since I have a thing about talking on the phone in close quarters, I texted (also I was complaining to my friend about the annoying middle schoolers right in front of me).

I think it's impossible to pick one side of the cell phone debate. Cell phones should be given only to those who use good judgement.

If I had the power to wipe one piece of modern technology from the face of the earth, it would be the cell phone. Yeah, they're convenient. Yeah, they're good for safety. But guess what? The human race managed to survive an awfully long time without them. I never got one till I started grad school and had a long, lonely night drive in a bad neighborhood. Even then, it was a pay as you go that was never turned on unless I was driving.

Eventually Mr. Syndrome and I got a family plan when we were building our house in FL; he had an IL area code and I had FL so that people in both areas could call us locally. But my phone is off half the time, and with the crappy reception we get in Celebration it might as well be off the rest. Yet people still insist on calling me on it rather than the land line and then wonder why they don't get an answer, no matter how many times I tell them. Sorry, but I refuse to be a slave to my phone.

The only time it comes in handy is if we're in the parks and get separated (vibrate only, please), if one of us is running late, or perhaps if Figment ever dumps me and I'm injured out in the middle of the woods (thankfully that has never happened). Other than that, I'd never miss it one bit. I don't even worry about car accidents because I have Onstar for that.
