My wife and I do tip well. Over 20% to at least 25% for good service. Even more if the service was exceptional.

A pet peeve of mine though is if we pay in cash, the server "sees" a large tip (because there is a huge difference between the amount of cash and the amount of the bill), and the server just says "Thanks." Ah no. IMO, the correct 'term' is: "I'll be back with your change."

Usually the servers that do that are the inexperienced ones.
Ha!
That happened to us at NYC on Easter day. We were very tired and didn't feel like looking for restaurants so we just went to Olive Garden on Times Square, because it was convenient, right where we got off the bus and walking distance of hotel.
At that restaurant, they automatically add 18% tip to your bill, probably because of all the foreigners (for the record, I usually tip 20%, because that's the easiest to figure out, we are not difficult and leave behind "clean" tables).
That night, we decided to pay cash. So we put money in the little folder-thingy, not the correct amount, because we had larger amount bills.
Waited comes, picks up that folder-thingy, takes out the money, says thank you and walks off.

HELLO?????? Tip was included in the final amount on our receipt, you should have given us change! We were so   that we didn't even think about calling him back and asking for our change. We haven't been back there after that.

In Miami, we also paid cash, the waitress asked us if we needed change on it (no, we didn't), that's the way to do it, IMO.

At WDW, they now have these polite little notes in the folder-thingy to explain tipping (and I appreciate the fact they calculate for you how much 18-20% is), sometimes in other restaurants you get this nasty handwritten note about how we (as stupid foreigners) MUST leave tip. I hate those at least be polite about it.

Conversely, I once tipped way high to make up for a table of jerks. It wasn't at WDW, but rather at a place called Lawry's The Prime Rib in Chicago (a very nice, rather pricey place that is one of my all-time favorite restaurants). At the table across from us were a pack of drunken jerks who were being downright rude to the server. Their initial abuse was because they could not get steak (duh, a$$wad, "Prime Rib" is in the name, the menu is outside the door, and this is what it is famous for). They were so abusive that I really think the manager should have kicked them out. Then, when they decided that she was not responding quickly enough, they started literally yelling "Miss Smith (or whatever her name was), you tip is going down, down down!" I doubt they left anything, and we felt so sorry for her that we tipped her quite a bit extra out of pity that she has to deal withy jerks like that.
At DLP's Planet Hollywood, they have rather hot waitresses. The table next to us had 4 young guys, can't remember if they were UK or Netherlands, but anyway, they started flirting with the waitress, while getting drunk, and in the end, when she didn't react on the flirting, they started to really harrass her and throwing things on the floor, stating it was her, asking for a manager to complain about waitress, etc.
Manager handles situation, gets them out, afterwards, I go to manager to give him the real story. I felt so sorry for the girl.
dizneeluvr wrote:i've had my share of good and bad in restaurants. but the main thing that annoys me is the food server not showing up after being seated. understanding that a restaurant is busy, they are busy. but as they pass the table they should give us and acknowledgement, that they'll be back in a moment to take the order. we've sat in applebee's one time for over 20 min before anyone came over. i started to get annoyed after 5-8 min, hubby said calm down. so we waited, then about 15 min i said i'm going to find someone. (many food servers passed our table). the kids were getting antsy, and so was i. he finally said let's leave. i said let me find a manager. he said no, let's just to go Friday's. we got up, and i said go to the car i'm finding a manager. calmly i explained to mgr and mgr said i'll get someone over, i expl hubby left w/kids and doesn't want to stay.. we ended up getting four free meal tickets for our next visit. thank you for keeping us as customers.
so i don't mind waiting, as long as the server acknowledges us anddoesn't ignore.
Something like this happened to us, also at DLP, at Blue Lagoon, the restaurant inside POTC. We had made reservations, checked in on time, and when they came to assign our table, we passed many nice tables with a nice view on the ride, but no we keep on continuing to a table in the back with not too many around. Table was halfway on stairs (I was scared to move my chair and fall off the steps), candle not lit (since this is a dark restaurant, the candle is necessary), cutlery on table not complete.
We weren't too happy to be seated there, but oh well.
Time flies,a nd 20 minutes later, we're still sitting there, no one checking on us or taking our order. I was tired, hot (like in warm and sweaty after running through a crowded theme park all day) and hungry, so I got up, took my bags, barked to my mom to follow me (sorry mom, but I was hungry and angry by then) and stormed out. I can tell you I was not too nice to the hostess about it. She was  because she had assigned us another table, but the person showing us our table, decided to put us in a closed section. Hostess tried to make up for it, offering a waterside table, but we just want to another restaurant (it can even be the Planet Hollywood thing was from the same night).

If I ever got a note like that they'd see a 50% cut in the amount.

Hi everyone! I'm new around these parts and have been in stitches reading some of the stories!!!!
The stuff CM put up with ~ golly would drive me insane!

I did want to mention before I go back to lurking that my family always loves the servers at Ohanas! We have never had a remotely close to bad server there before! :D:

Last year we ate here for breakfast and I asked the server if they had the kona coffee available. Without missing a beat our server ran over to kona's and got me a pot of french pressed coffee without even telling me she was going to it just showed up like magic :D:
She made my entire morning that much brighter!
(oh she did get a huge tip but that's not the point here)

Hi Praline ! !

The marsupials should be along shortly for a proper welcome.
Untill they get here, SAFETY FIRST !

Thanks for the great welcome!

There seriously needs to be a warning somewhere about not drinking while reading some of these posts!!!

OMG I could have screwed my keyboard all up on a few ;)

Since posters are trying to swing this threat OT ~ here is one for you that I still chuckle about!

(I am and always have been just a guest BUT as a mom I make sure to have a kind word or smile to those younger college CM's who are so far from home and deal with crap all day!)

My DD7 and I were going to Splash Mountain to get FP's. We were all happy and being silly and just having girl fun!
WELLL Splash was down. There was a young CM standing there taking such abuse from a few of the guest! I couldn't believe my EARS!!!! The one dad with 3 kids was using the F bomb and every other bomb right there and his finger was in this CM's face.... telling HIM to get his ASS over there and fix that F*ing ride. The CM TRIED to explain that he wasn't trained to fix the ride ~ oh this dad was purple faced at this point. The reason this stood out soooo much in my mind? My DD7 took our FP's and handed them to the dad and told him "Sir, you need this more than I do." She did this before I could grab her ~ needless to say the guy stomped off and the CM thanked my DD and gave her a couple of replacement FP's for her having such good manners :D:

After that moment I realized first hand what you guys go through on a daily basis ~ WOW

anyway... welcome to the board?!?

I have noticed way more SRTs at local restaurants than down in touristland, probably due to the fact that the tourists expended some money to get there.

It could be worst. The meal vouchers are the best. You know when a SG can't read it correctly. You can not purchase a few turkey legs, chips and a few sodas with a meal reading Character Meal voucher. Sorry, the outdoor vending carts don't have that programed into the registers.

A similar thing happens here in England - for some reason the supermarket chains such as Tesco and Asda end up as "Tesco's" or "Asda's". It's odd.
