When I was a kid our house was across a large field from a drive-in. Someone would cut the grass in the field, bail it, and pile up the bails in the middle of the field where they'd sit all summer.

All the neighborhood kids would take food and drink out to the pile of bails and watch movies all summer. The sound was provided by the unused speakers that had been left on.

Good times.

There's a 5-screen drive-in south of Dallas. They play first-run movies but with all the old dorky lead-in and intermission reels. Plus they have a decent, cheap old-style snack bar. It's an hour drive from my home, but I've still been several times. It's an experience worth preserving!

When I was a kid living in Ventura County, we used to go to the 101 Drive-in. Then we were in Australia for six months, came back and lived in Orange County, and one summer we went up to our old neighborhood. The house we'd lived in after we came out from Massachusetts was gone, replaced by an apartment building; our second house was still there, but the neighborhood had been expanded. When we went by the 101, we were shocked to see it offering X-rated movies. Later, in the mid-70s, it was torn down, and the site is now a shopping center. :(

I used to love being able to come in my pajamas with the other kids and play on the playground in front of the screen until the lights blinked, indicating that the movie was about to start. Then we'd dash back to our cars, and watch the movie. Of course, as soon as we got back home, we went to bed, hence wearing PJs to the drive-in.

We always wore the PJs because the first feature was for families, and the second was usually more "grown-up" so we'd fall asleep in the back while the parents enjoyed the second part of the bill.
