Or if you're in the area of York, PA, there's a papermill that is pretty stinky when the wind blows in the right direction. However, since the company name is the same as my mom's maiden name--yep, relatives of ours--I won't say it. But if there's anything positive, also in the afternoons you can pick up the delicious aroma of Stauffer's where they make cookies, crackers, etc.--I temped there once. Their safety requirements/equipment is in need of modernization.

I lived in a lumber town in Washington that had a huge paper mill. The whole town reeked until they were forced into putting a filtration system on the smoke stacks. What a difference.

I wish they would have done that in West Point, Virginia. Weyrhauser has a big paper mill there, and on hot days, you can smell it nearly ten miles away. Too bad, because it's a pretty drive.

I was just talking with someone this morning about odd smells that to me mean "home." I was born in Southeast Texas, the "Golden Triangle," which is heavy on oil refineries. They have a very distinct and pungent odor, yet to me they smell like home.
Then when I was seven, I moved to Golden, Colorado, just a couple of miles from the Coors brewery. When the wind was right, you could really smell the fermenting hops and barley. I don't drink, but that's still a very nostalgic smell for me!
(Insert your own darph joke here.) :D:

There's a big paper mill in Brunswick GA that we have to go by on our way to Jekyll Island. But since most everyone we know has invested in GA Pacific (the paper manufacturer) we always say that it smells like money. :D:
