Cool! P&G also went after a trailer park newsletter editor for doing the same thing. A $10 mil lawsuit got him hopping to print a retraction.

I could be wrong, but I think they used to say McDonald's did the same thing--secretly gave some of there company products to Satanic groups. Don't know who started that. Maybe it was spread because of the Amway thing, to "legitimize" the P&G charges. If you want to succeed in business, you don't do it by slandering the competition, you do it by having a better product than your competition.

Negative selling against a competitor will always come back to bite you. The customer will eventually find out and take everything you say with a large grain of salt. A better strategy is to seed the customer with questions to ask the competition that will be tough for them to answer or demonstrate.

I ran a corporate demo room for a few years. I showed things to customers and challenged them to ask all of our competitors if they could do as good or do it at all. I closed a lot of business in that room.

The one surefire way to get me to steer clear of your business is to trash your competitors, if your product isn't good enough to sell on its own merit, it's not good enough to sell. Products that I steer clear of whenever possible are Apple computers (the Apple/PC commercials) and Alltell (the commercials featuring the competing companies). For a while, Universal was running a campaign in Orlando with things like twelve year old girls saying, 'If I have to kiss another princess, I'll puke.' I'm sorry, if that's your advertisement, obvioulsy you have an inferior product. I personally think that our society has become way too rude, and this is just one manifestation of it. Sorry for the rant.

I just steer clear of Amway myself. They have been around for years and always have been, shall we say, overly aggressive. My sister sells the stuff and whenever the family gets together, the first thing she does is try to sell me Gold Star products. It is Amway. They just call it Gold Star now, but the Amway lable is on the jars. They try so hard to bring you into the fold. No thanks.

The way I see it, if a product is any good, it'll sell itself. Look at how Mr. Knott sold his boysenberries--word of mouth advertising-- the best kind, because it's free and it works.

Any product that is sold aggressively is either a front for a cult, trash, or both. A company shouldn't have to brainwash its employees to sell stuff. I'm sure you've tried telling your sister not to be so pushy and aggressive, Susi, and I'm betting she's blown you off.

Good old Amway. I dated a girl who was selling their junk. I went to a product pickup with her one night. Talk about a cult.

And the tapes! She'd play those damn things every time we were in the car. It was always guys with squeaky voices talking about how successful they were. One night I had a headache and couldn't take it any more. I yanked out the tape, tossed it out the window and told her if she ever played another one the same thing would happen.

Amway is just another pyramid scheme with all the dealers trying to get more people below them.
