Momofuku Ando’s 105th Birthday



If you’ve ever needed to eat something quickly and cheaply, you may be familiar with this mantra:
With these four simple steps, Taiwanese-Japanese inventor Momofuku Ando introduced to the world instant ramen, a dish that not only revolutionized food but also serves as a testament to what hard work and perseverance can achieve. Our doodle for the inventor’s 105th birthday showcases Momofuku’s efforts to make instant noodles, but don’t let the speed of the animations fool you – it took Ando years to figure out the recipe!
After months of hard work, Ando’s perseverance paid off. He eventually discovered that by flash-frying ramen noodles in tempura oil, tiny holes were created in the noodles that allowed them to cook nearly instantly once combined with hot water. It was a success, and customers were enthusiastic about the time they were saving. It was the first step to achieving Ando’s goal of ending world hunger.

Gerardus Mercator’s 503rd Birthday



In 1569, cartographer Gerardus Mercator created the first map based off the Earth’s spherical shape.“The Mercator Map” became the standard map used for sailing and played a critical role in advancing the field of cartography. Our doodle in Belgium marks his 503rd birthday.

Our doodle in the U.S. and the U.K. marks the 216th Birthday of English photographer and botanist Anna Atkins. Considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographs, Atkins is also credited with being the first to use cyanotype, a printing process the uses cyan-blue print, for photography.

Irish Car Bomb is one of the most popular drinks worldwide. The ingredients are simple and widely available, and beer lovers will almost certainly enjoy it. If you ask for one of these in an Irish pub you'll be greeted with either a smile, or a black eye. Enjoy!

3/4 pint Guinness® stout
1/2 shot Bailey's® Irish cream
1/2 shot Jameson® Irish whiskey

Add the Bailey's and Jameson to a shot glass, layering the Bailey's on the bottom. Pour the Guinness into a pint glass or beer mug 3/4 of the way full and let settle. Drop the shot glass into the Guinness and chug. If you don't drink it fast enough it will curdle and increasingly taste worse.
