These latest posts of mascot abuse reminds me of one very special costumed character: The San Francisco Giants "Crazy Crab". Let me take you back to that by-gone year of 1984. The marketing department for the team had done a survey to see which character the average Giants fan would like. However, the response they got back was that most of the folks really didn't want a mascot. In a spark of genius, they ran with this result with a twist. They came up with this dippy-looking crab costume, and ran ads with everyone, from the fans in the bleachers to the team themselves absolutely HATING the crustacean. Like the villain of a melodrama, people were encouraged to boo and hiss whenever the Crazy Crab appeared! At one point, the actor has to be assured that no-one in the stands were carrying firearms before he would go out. One does hope that, at the very least, that costume was well padded.
