I suspect the use of lathes and welders might make the risk management people for the university go squirrely ! And of course in the hands of someone not properly trained in their use, those can be very dangerous tools.Mayonnaise wrote:I think they sent the clamp right back for a replacement from the company that shipped it. *Yawns.* But they're not expecting it in time for opening.
As for the Lathes and MIG Welders... I believe that's less a matter of lacking skill as lacking a Metal cutting Lathe or a MIG Welder. While we have been known to do things which would probably be OSHA violations were this a workplace and not 100% volunteer community theater (except for some reason we pay the pit musicians) we are not about to start using welders without campus permission... especially since they put a blanket ban on us using pyrotechnics after Pippin.
I'm still stuck here sponging on bricks... with no end in sight. It's tech weekend so I don't get to go anyplace till the set's done for tomorrow's cue to cue, which bites, because I'm also in the cast so I don't get to rest during rehearsals. Technically there's nothing keeping me here.... except my live-in boyfriend is the set designer, and he can't go till it's done, and we've only one car between the two of us since his broke down last month.

Plus welders always set off smoke detectors at the most inopportune times ! If it triggers a stage two alarm and drops the fire curtain, the fusible link must be replaced, often by an trade electrician or someone from the alarm company. Plus the fines from the fire dept for a false alarm. Not pleasant.
Our painters always get stuck working the lousy hours, overnite and on the day off. They do as much of the work as possible in the shop, but there always a couple nights worth of touch ups and changes before opening.I don't envy them.
Its getting more and more rare for lx to work overnight thank goodness. Only in emergency situations, or road show load outs. Nothing like finishing work at 5 am, going to the hotel to shower, then heading to the airport to go to the next city. Bloody Marys for breakfast can become a habit !
