The whole half full/half empty thing never really worked for me. If the glass was being filled but they stopped halfway it is half full, but if the glass was filled all the way and is being emptied it is half empty. If I do not have access to such information I fall back to sillier solutions to the problem.

True, but we havn't even talked about the surface tension of the liquid, nor the adhesion properties of the liquid to the glass, if the glass were to suddenly be upended, or say, enter a field that caused the loss of gravity.
