I did some pin trading while at was at DL/DCA yesterday. I only trade with CM's (because I never have what the supper traders/sharks want) and did OK. I got another 2010 DL Hidden Mickey pin so only 20 or so more to go. :)
I did get two bootleg pins. One was a WDW Hidden Mickey and the other was a Figment. I had a feeling that the Figment was bootleg and a search on pinpics.com confirms it. The back of the pin looked good though.
At any rate the only thing that bummed me out was a unfriendly CM at the Frontierland trading area. I realize it was hot and the task boring, but you could have at least smiled. She had her hands crossed on her chest and was not interacting with the guests. Didn't even say "hi" when I said "hi". I would have put a word into City Hall, but the line was out the door when I walked by it.

Dude if there was a job labeled Pin Trader, I would totally do that!! I would love pin trading and get paid for it! hehe....cause pin trading is a very serious business amongst those pin nazis. :) Sorry you had a bad CM experience...

Just for the record, I rarely have a bad CM experience pin trading or not. She was the exception and certainly not the rule.
I agree Wicked, the pin trading assignment would be fun. Might annoy a few pin Nazi's too.

There are a few Evil Pin Traders, but most seem like nice people....They are just looking to get something that will be sought after someday as "hard to get" or something that fits into their personal collections. Problem is, what you want will probably have to be traded for a Limited Edition or something that is from another geographical area
My rule of thumb is that if a Pin Trader wants more than a pin for a pin, be prepared to walk away ;)

I wouldn't be scared to wear a lanyard. You don't have to trade with guests (technically you don't have to trade with anyone, if you didn't want to).

I will be your guide for this magical journey into the movies. It's the perfect job for me, because I love movies! Is everybody ready? Great, because it's showtime. Ready when you are, CB!

I have no problem wearing my lanyard. I'm a guest, I don't HAVE TO trade with you.

WDW, DTD, WoD, group of 16 going to dinner at Portobello Yacht Club for a "reheasrsal" dinner, killing time before ressie, scatterd at WoD. I'm just standing off to the side at one of the room to room openings, when someome asks to see my pins. No problem. But, they wanted one of my display pins, not one of my traders. Problem. The good thing is that once I said I wasn't a Cast Member and didn't have a nametag they apologized. We did end up trading for one of my other pins.

Black shoes, Dockers pants, pin lanyard and a solid, light-colored, button-down shirt do not automatically mean I am a CM.

Lots of them are bootlegs, though
Nifty pins. Bootlegs, I take it, are pins not authorized by Disney? Are there any particular rules (written or otherwise) as to what makes something a "trading pin" and what isn't? Sorry about the thread-jacking...

I am scared of the Evil Pin Traders as well.....but not for me, for my children. Both my older two LOVE to pin trade and we have had many magical experiences with CMs who really seem to enjoy it and the interaction with the kids. Here's the funny thing: my kids tend to pick out hidden Mickey or "special" pins....they just like them, most of the time. For instance, my daughter loves the fairies from Sleeping Beauty - a couple of years ago, she traded for the first one of the set of three and we discovered the hidden Mickey....tickled us pink!

The problem I have is the adult Pin Nazis who attempt to trade with my kids. Somehow, they can spot the fact that one of my kids has a "special" pin and will try and ask them to trade. But we have a way around that. My kids will reply, very politely, "I'm sorry, but I'm only allowed to trade with CMs". Ticks 'em off everytime.

I will admit....I look for the Figment ones to collect on my own (hubby and I have a display case we put our pins in). I was ticked off this past year when I couldn't get the F&W Figment because it was for passholders only. Needless to say, I bought it on eBay! LOL

Have a great day everyone!

Between guests, there are no rules -- if you can work out a deal on a trade, you make it. CM's, though, can only trade for official Disney pins, which should have the (C) copyright symbol and "Disney" on the back.

"Thread-jacking"? That only applies to a site where the threads stay on topic (i.e., not here). :D:

I kind of figured that between guests, one can trade as one pleases, but I thought there might be some sort of customs that polite avid pin-traders follow.

Oh, I know that threads see more drifting than the latest street racing games, but when I am about to cause one to go off-track, I feel a bit of apology is only good manners. :)
