My question is, Why would you go ANYWHERE, let alone a place to buy alcohol without your ID.

Exactly!! I always make sure I have my ID with me, no matter where I go.

Same here. I never go anywhere without my wallet which is where I always kept my driver's license. I'm keeping my DL behind my Disney ID in my lanyard now as this ID has no picture so I have to have a photo ID handy to get on the cast bus or anything. Not a problem normally but I'll have to make sure I take my DL with me if I go shopping on my day off or something.

Most people don't realize if a cop stops you walking down the street, and you don't have an ID you can be arrested.

I think you're mistaken. You do not have to show your ID to a cop unless he has probable cause to be asking for it. A cop can't just do random ID checks on a public sidewalk.

Sometimes I think we forget how important having an ID on you can be. We knew a guy who was at an out of town convention that went jogging with no ID, was hit by a car, and lay in the hospital for several days before he was identified. His family was frantic. You just never know when you might need that ID to speak for you if you can't speak for yourself.

You are required to identify yourself if stopped by a cop. You are not required to have any identity papers. That's why there's so much resistance to a National Identity Card that may be required to fly.

Shorty is correct. Now, if you are driving you are required to have your driver's license, but walking down the street, at least so far, is allowed without i.d.!

In Texas, at least, a police officer can talk to you for just about any reason but can only stop you for any length of time for good cause to believe that you are a witness to or involved in a criminal offense.

If you are arrested, you are required on request to give your name, residence address and date of birth, and refusal to do so is a separate offense.

If you are not arrested but only detained, or if approached because the officer has good reason to believe you are a witness, he or she can request your information, but you are not required to respond. If you do answer, though, you are required to be truthful -- giving a false name, address or date of birth is an offense.

Here endeth the lesson. :)

I thought you had 24 hours to produce your drivers license if asked for it when driving... in case you forgot your wallet or whatever...
