The final implementation of the RFID system will track guests movements for analytical studies, trends in shopping habits, and help merch and food locations make suggestions to guests when they are in the store. Its alot like the movie "Minority Report". The other intended use is going to be for interactive ques at attractions and shows.

Its all going to be very big brother before the end... but i also see this being a HUGE waste of money in the end... kinda like the MIMS boxes on the busses.....

Disney is in the process of replacing all cast IDs at domestic properties. It's a very big job so it is taking awhile as this change is mandatory so all cast have to get new IDs (last change wasn't mandatory). The new IDs still have mag strips and bar codes as those are used quite a bit. One reason for the change is to get the ID's standardized across the company, every property used to have their own style ID and the color of the ID varied depending on your status with the company. The base design of the new ID's are the same at the different properties and the property name is printed on the card and there are only two colors, blue and green. Blue for cast and green for operating participants, contractors, and the like.

There are three generations of IDs out there right now and both the second and third have RFID tags in them (though older 2nd gen might not have RFID, I'm not sure) though there is nothing to indicate that on the ID itself without close examination.

They sure have. Took a while to get used to it but now that I am I don't mind. All I have to do is hold my wallet up to the reader and the gate unlocks so I can go through. Last I heard they were in the process of rolling out the same style gates to Epcot and Studios (due to how MK cast enter the park I understand they're having trouble figuring out how to do it there).

MK is going to get a gateless turnstile, basically tap your wallet and the guard makes sure it beeps right.
Without a guard examining each ID, they can't really check to make sure it is yours though.

No guard examines the IDs at DAK. I guess they figure someone using another's ID isn't going to be a problem. I do know the once you scan your card your ID is locked out for 15 minutes on the gates, which I'm sure is to prevent CMs from handing their ID's through the gate to someone else.

They are still there for bag check though right?

DLR changed over to the blue IDs in early spring. Still think of Burbank when I am given a blue ID. We have 2 DLS Officers @ Harbor Point, one inside & one just before CMs enter. The DLS Officer as CM enters is supposed to look @ pix ID, but when I go in the officer always says; "Here's comes trouble," :o: then I show back of ID. I tap back of my blue ID & turnstyle unlocks for my entery. After I was issued new blue ID a lead took it & put tape across the front as he said they seemed to show use marks when swiped in register all the time. Have never taken my new blue ID out of my double plastic case as I've been scanning it with scan gun when I go on register. Does adove sound similar to WDW?

Some info was posted here regarding the RFID wristbands Image .

My first thought was, what about fastpasses?

I know when I go - I stand in line and get the fastpasses for the family. What about the BTG? Will they all have to stand in line to order fastpasses and how will you know the return time?

OOOO. Great question. That definitly might clog up the FP issuing station if everybody had to go instead of just one volunteer.

I mean, I get people's apprehension about big brother tracking them, but the article you provided the link to actually makes me kinda excited about this.

Thanks for the clarification, Doctor.

The RFID stuff could be interesting, especially since my wife and I are probably non-typical in our touring. :p: I have no objection to them following our movements in the park and trying to customize the experience, but I'm just not sure how well that all would work. Just so long as it doesn't slow things down like the point mentioned above about fast passes.
