Depends! ;)
Your musings on Chickens reminds me of my Mom telling me about a cute little pet chicken she had when she lived in El Segundo....Gertie had grown up from a little chick that my mom had won at a carnival, and was a devoted friend.Sadly, one Thanksgiving, she disappeared :(
Everytime I go past BTM Ranch, I try to say hello to Courage, one of the Pardoned Turkeys at Disneyland who escaped the same fate.Courage is a very charming fellow, probably why they chose him to be saved :)

Part of my life, I grew up on a "ranch." It's in quotes because it really was more like a family compound (and has gotten more so as my uncle, who lives there full time, has become paranoid and added electric fencing and alarms and stuff- all of which he turns off when they come on in the middle of the night because "it's just some animal"- yeah, I know! Then why even have it, right?) Anyway, we used to have chickens and a couple of cows and pigs. Every so often a chicken or rooster or pig would no longer be there. Dinner would be AWESOME that evening. :)
I remember always going for scavenger hunts to find the eggs since the chickens would only lay about 1/2 their eggs in the roost and 1/2 in the woods.

But then there was the Jewish Grandmother who had two chickens. One got sick, so she killed the other one to make Chicken Soup to cure the first one.
