DLR employee sent home for wearing muslim head covering

Those witches hats are too tall to be worn for most day to day operations. It's hard to go through doorways with them, they catch on things..just messy.... :D: And they're a pain to clean to boot....just not practical for day to day wearing.

Heres what I have seen and read of this. The CM in question is from Morroco, so she was probably raised muslum. She found out while studying for her US citizenship exam that its against federal law for an employer to discriminate against her because of religion so she decieded she would attempt to wear the head scarf to work due to ramadan. She was told she could not wear it onstage in its current form and was offered a back stage position and measured by costuming so they could design something that fit with the costum that would allow her to wear the head scarf. I saw her on the news last night and they had designed a sorta female cowboy type hat for her to wear over the scarf. She found this unacceptable, as well as accepting and off stage position and has chosen to go home instead of working. I'm sure theres a lawyer behind all this somewhere.

I will keep all personel comments to myself mainly due to the amount of profanity that is involved and I do not wish to offend anyone with my opinions.
I hope Disney stands up to her and whoever is behind her on this and fights it to the end.

Disney has done everything they can to accomodate her, above and beyond what they do for any other employee. They have offered her a comparable job at the same rate of pay not in the view of guests. When she didn't like that, they made a special headcovering for her that was in the "Disney Look" that would meet her requirements.

If this was someone in my faith doing this, I'd give them what for, both for being an idiot, and for creating bad press for my faith. If she wanted to challenge the policy, she should have done it quietly, while taking the backstage position or wearing the bonnet, and going through the proper channels. I would not do it publically, while being followed by the press and an audience of supporters. I think that's what makes me more angry at her, not for wanting to wear her scarf, but by acting like an attention seeker.

I think she's waiting for Disney to fire her over it. Per the paper, she has filed a EEOC Complaint, but I think she's probably waiting until they fire her to sue them.

Well said Techie. I completely agree. And I don't think wearing anything that is sacred to your religion is "pushing your religion in anyone's face" or that it implies that your employer endorses any specific religion if they choose to let you wear it. But in this case, as part of the "show" this employee is required to wear a costume. She knew it all along and is unwilling to work with the company in anyway to resolve her situation. I hope Disney just keeps sending her home until she either quits or has racked up enough points that they can term her.

I have people in my office that wear GINORMOUS crosses and advertise their faith all over their cubicle. (More faith related stuff than job related stuff.) Unless they try to proselytize to me, I let it go. I choose not to advertise my faith in any way at work, but if I did, I would expect my company not to ask me to take it down.

Yes, I was proselytized to at work. I went to that person's manager, spoke to them and informed them of the situation and that the next time, I would get HR involved, which would not be pretty. It stopped quickly.

Disney worked with her to try and accommodate her, yet she still refuses? Sigh. Why do people have to drag out drama and make it all national? I don't like work drama, and this is seriously one big case of work drama.
