I find it appalling that credit card companies would in fact try to PREVENT a Point of Sale person from stopping fraudulent use of their cards, by telling them they are not allowed to require ID.

You can always put "Please See ID" in the signature spot on the back
Personally I hate it when they ask for id simply because I forget mine a lot.
I also don't want them to have a. my credit card number and b. my address, date of birth, and in some states your SSN (our state used to use SSN's for the license number). That is a lot of information for someone to have.

Actually, you can't do that anymore.

if you do, it means that its an invalid card. check with your credit card issuer.

now what you can do is put that in AFTER your signature, but there is no obligation for them to do so.

a friend of the family is a small business owner and he has upset several customers by refusing the card because of that.

plus I think that several people here have stated that.

when I got some of my new cards that expired, they made a point of saying that they must be signed.

:)

Yep, it's not my problem to help their company make more money. I don't like being treated like a criminal just because I know what the bounds of the law are and actually exercising them. I don't want this country to become a place of complacency so that if the government/large corporation starts overstepping their bounds in a harmful way no one notices.

I know that, in a former job, I occasionally got folks who said they didn't sign their cards because, if they were stolen, the thief would know how to forge their signature. I would then point out that, by leaving the card unsigned, the thief didn't need to forge their signature, as they could just sign the card themselves, and have no problem getting it to match when signing receipts...

I, of course, sign my cards, and also put a "See ID" after it. True, no business has to follow that direction on my card, but then again, I don't have to continue doing business with them if I think they are inattentive regarding my cards.... :cat1:

For a few years many retailers would ask for a S.I.N. number (Canadas social security) or a phone number for credit card transaction. Many times I was asked and refused. In Canada it is actually illegal to ask someone for it as a form of ID. It can only be asked for if they are providing you with income, as it is required for tax reporting to Revenue Canada. When I ask a sales clerk if they are planning on paying me, they always say no ! Then no SIN number for you . Only my employer, bank and broker get that number.

A major effort by the government and the CC companies has reduced the requests greatly. That number is the easiest way to steal someones identity.

As for the phone number, there is no requirement ion the cardholder agreement to disclose it. I always just ignore the request. They have never given me grief over it. They asked at Canadian Tire just last week. I gave them the number of the largest local pizza delivery place.

Other than financial requirements I always refuse to divulge my SS number. if pressed, I quote the federal 1974 Privacy Act.
