All might not be so well there....
I read a story about the native Hawaiians taking over a tourst facility and holding court. It seems that they are going to confiscate all private holdings of forigners and re-distribute to the native born.
Hmmmmm,
and are trying to get the same status as the native Americans on the mainland, then claim the whole of Hawaii as tribal lands...
wonder when the casinos will start to be built?
Sounds like they are trying to susceed!

OH NO!!! You CAN'T stay on topic here! All threads here go off topic and that is the norm. Don't stay on topic! We would not know how to post! It would confuse us!Euterpe wrote:I usually don't participate in off-topic chatter, but yesterday I had my wisdom teeth pulled, so now I'm craving pudding and I can't have it, and I don't even like pudding! Ever notice that food commercials are much more effective when you can't eat them. I want hot dog and pizza and burgers and chip... But I can barely eat ice cream...
Okay, promise to be on topic from now on.

Would that be trying to secede and then succeed at being a sovereign nation? ;)GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:All might not be so well there....

That would be one of the sovereignty whack job groups. This particular one chained the gates and put up no trespassing signs at the Iolani Palace. Rather then create the big news event they were looking for, the cops kept it very low key and eventually evicted them from the grounds with little fanfare.GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:All might not be so well there....

A number of these groups exist. They say they want sovereignty but it's all about money so they can sit on their okoles. The group that chained the gates has also sued the state and feds for a trillion dollars. Good luck.
The tribal deal is interesting too. They demanded to be recognized as a racial group and almost made it until the US Supreme Court said the US will never be about race (something called the Constitution helped them out) and threw them out of court. The poor racists wanted a do over because they then decided they were an Indian tribe. This may happen if the Akaka bill in the Senate ever passes.
Regardless of what, if anything happens, we won't see any casinos. The feds have made it VERY clear that nothing will happen if there's even a slight chance of casinos being built.

I get my car today! How bittersweet.
Legend: Alligators dwell in the sewers beneath Disneyland.
Truth: There are no sewers below Disneyland, and therefore no alligators in them. The secret tunnels are infested with mutant rats, however.

I once read a book about the history of Catalina Island, and one time back in the 60s or 70s a group of Mexicans decided the treaty giving Catalina to the U.S./CA wasn't "legal", so they took over Mount Ada and held their little protest and demanded that Catalina be returned to Mexico. But there were only a few activists, and the cops went up and made them pack their stuff and vamoose. As far as I know, the Native American population of the island hasn't pulled anything like that.
