Re: Ignorance to the Nth degree
I warn you, this is gonna be long LOL
I do not know how I missed this thread originally!
I grew up in a very suppressed, uptight, homophobic religious environment.
I defected from the family faith in my 20's, and it cost me dearly. Namely, it cost me 99% of my family. But that's another story for another day.
I was never able to stomach the attitude that my ministers and family and all were telling me I had to have toward gay people.
I got to know many gay people through work starting as a young teen and I just always felt deep down that each one of us is what we are. We're born that way, we hopefully live true to who we are, and we hopefully at the end of our lives are happy with the way we've lived.
I've raised my child with this attitude and when she hears her other family members talk against gays, she gets very upset. I wonder what will happen on her upcoming trip with the 'religious' half of her family if they run into any gay couples there. I know that some of them would be prone to make rude remarks, but my child believes a family is a family and as long as it's adults involved, no one should judge.
I just hope that her generation can move us, at last, past the belief that 'my way is the only way' when it comes to belief systems and faith and people can just learn to live and let live.
I know, I'm sorry. I'll get down off the box before I start singing a rousing chorus of "Imagine" by John Lennon.
Now as far as park PDA's, I'm guilty of sneaking a kiss or two during a fireworks display now and then. But nothing that I wouldn't do in front of my OWN child or anyone elses.
I'm especially reminded of my wedding day. We got married at a chapel in Kissimmee (we couldnt' afford the whole disney wedding) had a lunch at a resort, then our small group of guests went into the MK with us and we spent the day there. We ended with dinner at the castle and then the fireworks.
It was before Fantasy in the Sky went away, and the video footage of my husband spontaneously kissing me during the fireworks as my sister filmed it is very special to me. It was our wedding day. The castle before us, the fireworks lighting the sky, and our shadows are showing.
It's nothing that you don't see in any animated disney movie!
You can even hear my sister telling the family beside her that we were just married that morning, and everyone 'awww'd'. Then we were done kissing and he just hugged me tight.
I don't think we offended anyone (i hope) but if anyone had known what we'd gone through to get to that day- they would have been cheering us on.
We went through hell to get to that day.
I do still believe that PDA's that go beyond a quick kiss are out of place in a Disney theme park. But if I do see a couple kissing, especially if they appear to be newlyweds, I'm all for that. I think it's romantic.
This reminded me of something sad! Speaking of hand holding.
I miss holding my husband's hand when we're in the parks! Being in the chair, we don't get to hold hands as much. But as soon as we park it and get into a queue or something, the free hand that is not leaning on my crutch seeks his out immediately.
Funny, what makes you think of little things you used to take for granted, but don't anymore.
Anyhoo.
I say, leave the couples alone if they're at a pg rating- but if any couple starts grasping and groping or gets involved in competitive tongue wrestling, then CM's should say something and stop it.

p.s. Oh! you know what offends me more in parks than people kissing?? Girls walking around with their hind ends showing, literally and their thongs sticking out! And with little crop tops that barely cover their chests! What is up with THAT? Why does Disney allow it? My husband and I were pretty disgusted by the lingerie that women were calling clothing last time we were there.

Sorry for another post but I was just thinking.
I wonder what the average homophobic SG would say if you told them that most of the disney movies their kids have probably grown up with and know all the songs by heart to like Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, and Lion King all have music and/or lyrics that that were written by openly gay men?
Damn, I would love to be the one to tell them just to watch the expression on their faces LOL.
I don't think people think. . .no wait. I'll just stop it there. I don't think people think!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAIT a minute! Robert B. and Richard M. Sherman were both married and had 4 and 3 kids, respectively! I don't think they were gay.

I apologize in advance without emoticons I don't know if you're joking. I'm guessing that you are- weren't the Sherman's brothers? (edit, yes they are! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Brothers)Ms. Matterhorn wrote:WAAAAAAAAAAAAIT a minute! Robert B. and Richard M. For those who may be lurking wonder what I was talking about I'll elabortate. . .
I was thinking specifically of Howard Ashman (lyricist, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and some of Aladdin which was not finished when he passed away.) and Elton John (Lion King)
I was so sad when Howard Ashman died but I remember cheering when his partner accepted his Academy Award:
This is from the wiki entry about him.
His second Academy Award in 1992 was awarded posthumuously for Best Song and was accepted by his partner, Bill Lauch.
He succumbed to AIDS at the age of 40 in Los Angeles, during the making of both Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. The song Proud of Your Boy from Aladdin was the one of the last songs ever written by Ashman but was cut from the movie after the mother was taken out of the story. Ashman and Menken had finished the songs for Beauty and the Beast, but Tim Rice was brought in to finish the Aladdin songs with Menken.
He was posthumously named a Disney Legend in 2001. Beauty and the Beast was dedicated to him with the following:
To our friend, Howard,
Who gave a mermaid her voice,
and a beast his soul.
We will be forever grateful.
Howard Ashman

Yes, they are brothers! I didn't mean to imply they were married TO EACH OTHER! ;)February wrote:I apologize in advance without emoticons I don't know if you're joking. I'm guessing that you are- weren't the Sherman's brothers?

thank you for inserting the all important emoticon so that my brain knows how to process the text it is reading LOL. I'm like a child anymore. (no comments from the peanut gallery please LOL)Ms. Matterhorn wrote:Yes, they are brothers! I didn't mean to imply they were married TO EACH OTHER! ;)
I can't read things with big words, I need picture books! lol
:D
PS to everybody-This is really an edit to my first post in this thread here but it's too late to put it there LOL. I realized that I never specified if I'm a man or a woman IRL, so to those who may wonder, I'm a female and I'm married to a man. I've never been anything but.
So when I talk about PDA's and kissing in the park, I guess I represent the 'straight' faction of kiss-sneakers during the fireworks LOL

I know most people here this will not be news of any kind to LOL. But I am sure a lurker or two is staring at the screen right now with their mouth hanging open LOL
At least, one can only hope ;)
