The new guy comes in, pisses off the people that have been building the business for years by telling them they don't know anything, hangs around for a while, screws things up, cashes in some stock options and splits for another company which sometimes turns out to be one of your competitors. And rather than replace the now gone ace with someone who knows what to do, they go get another outsider.
We have a phrase for this sort of management tactic where I work. We've seen it in action more than once. We call it "seagull management". They hire some guy who brings in all his cronies. They crap all over everything and make a lot of noise before flying off to the next place.

Speaking of management, here's the bio of a guy I worked for. Make sure and read the entire third paragraph.

David Hitz, Founder and Executive Vice President
As executive vice president, David Hitz is responsible for the future strategy and direction of NetApp.

Dave Hitz and James Lau founded NetApp in 1992 with a desire to simplify storage the way Cisco simplified networking. Hitz and Lau believed that general-purpose computing systems were too complex, so they built dedicated devices called appliances. These appliances were designed to handle one thing well: storage.

Prior to 1992, Hitz worked as a senior engineer at Auspex Corporation, an enterprise storage solutions provider, where he was responsible for file systems and microkernel design. He also held engineering positions at MIPS Computer, focusing on file system and I/O subsystem design for the System V kernel development effort. Before his career in the computer industry, Hitz worked as a cowboy, getting valuable management experience by herding, branding, and castrating cattle.

Hitz holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and electrical engineering from Princeton University.

For a guy who's probably worth well into nine figures he was pretty down to earth and a straight shooter. Plus, if he got caught BSing us, he either got his hair dyed or thrown in the pond next to the cafeteria.

He was a real smart kid who got bored with high school so he dropped out and worked on a ranch. He finally decided to go to college, took the SATS and got accepted to Princeton. In the middle of his junior year they discovered he had no HS diploma so he got suspended. He got a GED and finished up his degree.

This must be what inspired my younger son to get all D's on his progress report

Anyone have a cattle ranch I can send him to?

Here's a tale of two of my cousins. Dick was a college All-American, served as an officer in the Army and eventually became a VP for a large lumber company in the Pacific Northwest.

Steve was a direction-less, professional student mommy's boy with green teeth. Their mothers talk occasionally. Steve's asked Dick's if her son could give him a summer job in one of his mills. The deal was done and he went to work in a mill located in Northern California.

Two weeks after Steve started, Dick visited the mill and asked the manager how his cousin was doing. The mill manager replied he was probably the cruddiest human being he had ever seen. He had moved into a rooming house in the worst end of town, observed a Indian beating up his squaw, tried to break it up and had been beaten to a pulp by the squaw before being arrested, which required the mill manager to bail him out.

Dick took Steve out behind the mill and slapped some sense into him. He told him he would move that day, brush his teeth daily and take a shower at least every other day. He also said he'd be back in two weeks and if he hadn't cleaned up his act, they'd be back behind the mill for another discussion.

At the end of the summer Steve returned home. His mother called Dick's saying how she couldn't believe how much Steve had matured. If she only knew the real story.
