At work we were taught after 9-1-1, if there is an unattended we leave the item alone and call security. You have no idea what is in that back pack.
I remember watching on the news, this family found a box of TNT and called the police and fire department. They did the right thing. They said the stuff was over 15 years old and unstable. The bomb squad had the robot come in and remove it. Then it was taken away into a special truck where it was blown up in a local park.

Ever since 9/11 Disney has taken things like unattended bags seriously. We're supposed to call Security and keep the area around the bag clear until they arrive. We don't touch the bag, period. When Security comes they'll take a look at the bag and if they can't see into it at all they call for a K9 unit to come out and check the bag.

I once left my rat in the room in her cage watching tv.
and when I came back to feed her, her food dish was full of stuff. I guess the maid gave her a lot of things, mostly nuts and chips thou.

Years ago my wife was flying to the US from and bringing her parrot along. She and the airline were worried about the bird going into the luggage area so the pilot volunteered to take the bird in the cockpit.
When she retrieved the bird in her cage there were remnants of a PBJ and some other food. The pilots had fed the bird from their meals.
