Don't forget that he definitely qualified for a Darwin Award Nomination.

This is a perfect example of why I am against helmet/seat-belt laws:

Helmet and seat-belt laws interfere with Natural Selection.


Let the idiots ride without helmets or seat-belts and remove themselves from the gene pool.

I honestly think our attempts to protect the stupid from themselves has helped to increase the number of stupid people (to the detriment of society).

That may be, but when they kill themselves through stupidity, our tax dollars are spent on an investigation. It's not good enough to say, "Yep. He wasn't wearing (Type-X Safety Apparatus), so he killed himself."

I'm with CBeilly, I think each individual should decide whether or not to wear a helmet. Although, when I read the story my first thought "natural selection at it's finest". I've never worn a helmet to ride my bike (not that I've done so in over 17 years), but I do wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle. I know plenty of instances where helmets have saved lives, but also a few where, if they had been wearing one, the person would have add more severe injuries (like a broken neck). It's up to the person....let them figure out if their noggin is worth it.

And on another note: Big Wallaby....are you younger than me?!?! I about spit out my Dr. Pepper all over the screen when I read that you had the Discovery Zone. I didn't have that....I had the monkey bars (although, ours were over grass....yeah Sanborn School District! lol). I do remember that we had dome monkey bars that were made up of metal triangles (I will try and find a picture).....I still have a chipped tooth from that. Was hanging upside down, came up to fast and WHAM....chipped tooth. Ah, well....the good old days of "quit crying....it'll stop hurting in a second". ;)

The main park in the town where I grew up had one of those when I was a kid. Looking back, that park was a dangerous place compared to today's parks. In addition to the dome monkey bars there were regular monkey bars, a metal merry-go-round (Faster, faster! We need another master!), a wooden hamster wheel type thing and then there was the main structure. That was a couple levels tall with ladders, slides, a fireman pole, and the like and it was all made of metal. The slides especially would get quite hot in the summer. The ground was some kind of rough sand with very small bits of rock in it, not the rubber mulch and the like you find nowadays.

The park is still there but everything from my childhood is gone now. In their place are two much smaller plastic play structures and a few other things. When I was a kid you risked getting burned, falling, and all kinds of injuries. With the current play structures the main thing you have to worry about is static shock!

All helmets do this (Batting helmets, Bike Helmets, Football Helmets..). We'd probably be a bit better off if we got rid of crossing guards and taught kids to.. y'know, look both ways again. We lost the idea of common sense without the basic idea of "Now see, you won't do that again now will ya?".

I vote we stop protecting idiots from themselves.
Then again I'm controversial on my ideas, I remember responsibility for my actions and miss it.

I like tourist season. I use the tourists as cones in a gymkhana course when I ride my scooter down Front St. in Lahaina. It's a target rich environment. :twisted:

Exactly - not to mention the cleanup! I don't want the community's resources wasted on an idiot who can't be bothered to wear a helmet.
