I admit a certain admiration for it just as an engineering feat. OTOH, I'm real glad it wasn't like that my first time. :p:

Say what you like, I think the castle cake was a very imaginative, original and fun idea not to mention expensive. So now when they don't spend money there's bitching, when they did there was bitching. If you're going to get bitching either way, you might as well save the money and do nothing.
It only lasted that one year and because of the lack of imagination on the part of the guests, I don't think you will ever see them do anything that original again. So don't worry!

Original, yes.....just like that sin....
Going around World Showcase is like traveling in time and relative dimensions in space!

I have a hard time understanding how so many people can get so emotional about creatively covering a "PLASTIC" castle. Stop taking everything so damn seriously. It's only a prop.

Heh!
Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Tell that to all the couples that got married at WDW that year. While every other couple gets the pretty Cinderella castle, they get cake mountain.

Ah, but it was designed to be an icon, and people can get very possessive of their icons. It's the image that is most frequently associated with the Magic Kingdom for a lot of people. Making a major change is always going to be risky. There will be people just waiting to see that icon in person after years of seeing it in ads and stories. Then they don't see what they expect. Major disappointment. Even for frequent visitors, that view down Main Street can be the "Ah, I'm here" moment. Icons often tap into emotion more than reason.

*Hisses* My eyes! They Bleed, AGAIN!
Damn, I thought I'd never have to look at that monstrosity again.
It was hideous and with WDW's budget they simply could have built something amazing that could have been a lasting monument without turning the castle into a bad acid trip Barbie Cake.
Seriously, the first time I saw that I was wondering who spiked my Strawberry-Kiwi Mystic!

I liked that castle. I was actually dissapointed the next time I visited and it was just the plain castle. I know, I'm a little weird!

Remember the group of people that worshiped a traffic barrier shaped like R2D2 in Golden Gate Park?
