Many community centers and community colleges do hold classes for those who have been out of the higher academic scene for a while. Heck, in some you can simply take classes with the rest of the regular students. If you would feel awkward amongst the youngsters, one can also take courses online via various universities and colleges. Personally I liked having older people in my classes. They were the ones who were most helpful with group projects and really shown interest in their studies because they were so driven to make up for all that lost time.
I know that when I was in college they had a group called MANTAS, with a plush manta ray as their mascot. Their name meant Mature And Non Traditional Aged Students.
Look about, maybe you'll find some place that may take you.
Actually, Sarah, I am a high school graduate, with an Associate's in Broadcasting/Journalism and a Bachelor's in Ministry. When I was getting my Bachelor's, I was in my late 40s. But I had a few classmates that were older--one lady was 65!
I just don't understand why my family chooses to believe this rubbish. But back in the 60s, you listened to the professionals, their word was gospel, even if it was based on junk science. Took me 35 years to find out that what they said about me was a load of crap. No, if I had to take courses, I'd take office computer applications, and the last time I checked, HP offers them for free online. Now I just have to have the self-discipline and find the time to actually sign up and take them.

Wow, you are VERY qualified for many great jobs out there! From the way you put things ....
<<I was never allowed to learn to drive, I was told I'd never be able to live alone or hold a decent job, and talk about self-fulfilling prophecies, sure enough, I wasn't allowed to upgrade my job skills, so here I sit, unemployed, and unqualified for anything out there in this crappy economy.>>
..... it seemed that your family made you very dependent and they refused to allow you to further yourself. After all, you said "self fulfilling prophecy". You seem to be underestimating your abilities and credentials. You have degrees, I'm betting that you'd be able to fill a position somewhere in your area. Broadcast/Journalism, my sister has that same degree and works in vast areas of entertainment - many with the Walt Disney Company before going freelance with various production companies in the Orlando area.

Like Wombat, I am going to have to agree to disagree with many here. However, I would like to remind you in the friendliest way possible that this is not a political forum, and I don't like where I've seen things go on other boards when politics get introduced. Let's not allow that to happen here.
I said I was gonna make it friendly, so give me a few minutes to come up with a graphic or something to make it fun.
Or, maybe you just get the point that I want to say it in a friendly way and won't make me go through all that work. Oh, yeah, this board is full of smart asses like myself that want to see the pic I can create. Hold on.

Like I said earlier the discussion about some radio show personalities has nothing to do with politics. The afore mentioned personalities deal in hate and fear mongering while collecting huge paychecks. I don't care if they're American Nazi, Democrat, Green, Independent, Republican or Workers World, there is no place for that kind of talk.
That said, I also am a firm believer in the First Amendment. Because of that the only way I can effect their ratings, and eventually their wallets, is to not listen to their shows and ask others to do the same.

Have you ever called a radio/TV station and told them you and such-and-such group were boycotting their station for reason X? Amazing the results you get, even if it's a national station. Makes it even more satisfying when you know that hundreds or thousands of other people in your community or across the country have called for the same reason, because they start getting really defensive.

I have called or written as an individual. Some changed, some didn't. Ya can't win 'em all.

Certainly not, but it never hurts to tell the station in question that you're leaving their services behind for this or that reason. If I call as an individual, I do it immediately. If I know they did something that's going to burn bridges with a lot of people, then I wait a day or so and let others call in first.

My oldest nephew works for The History Channel as an assistant producer on the show, "Shockwave". Yeah, I know I'm qualified, but here in California the market is saturated. I've been putting in for retail--I have student loans I need to finish paying off, as well as an eviction--and no matter how well I do in applying or interviewing, I never hear back. I just found out that I won't be getting a stimulus check, because I had no income last year. Plus, because I had no income, I didn't file--I have had the IRS tell me if I don't have an income, I don't need to file. I've lived in other states, but prefer California. I'm trying to get working on my book series, but it's slow going. The best advice I've gotten is don't work quickly when writing. I'm hoping that with a Sprouts Market opening nearby soon, to which I have applied, will give me a job and I can get some income. Because sitting at home all day stinks.

Not now. Mom and I are living in Orange County--I don't want to say where--and right now we're committed to living here. If something doesn't come up for me after mom passes away, I'll ask. Because mom needs me to help her with stuff--she has COPD and two abdominal aortic aneurysms, and there's things she needs help with when she has trouble breathing. I generally do the laundry and housework, and occaisonally cook. Of course with MY luck, she'll probably stick around until the deferment on my student loans runs out. Federal loans, you don't want to default on those. But maybe I'll go and look at the History Channel site....
