I have to say that though it was wrong for the teacher to have the other kids tell him why they "hate him" I have seen many teachers that remove the disruptive child from the class. And with so many parents using the BS excuse "oh they have ADD, they have Autism." when the real problem is the parents don't know how to spank a child's butt. So once again this falls into the area of the fact that there is no official medical word that the child has Autism, which is most likely why charges were not filed against the teacher.

I always liked the one where a substitute teacher was teaching a class of 1st graders (i think) and one student was being disruptive during a game the teacher was trying to have the class play. after several times of asking the child to calm down, the teacher decided to change course and stopped the game to move on to another subject. She then heard the entire class chant "OUT OUT OUT" when she turned around the class had grabbed the student by his arms and legs and carried him out int o the hall way and left him. The Sub later found out that the normal teacher would send the child out in the hall way when he acted up. When the class seen that the Sub did not do anything, they took matters into their own hands.

Clearly you have never worked with children with autism or adhd. The child was just officially diagnosed with a combo of the two. I have worked in a preschool room for children with autism, and the type of program we use to is very intense. That is the only way to modifiy their behavior. "Spanking their butt" will not work, traditional discipline techniques will not work, because their brains are not wired like a normal child's. I'm not saying that this is an excuse to let a child run rampant. What this means is you have to understand the diagnosis and then use an appropriate intervention.

To give you an idea of how intensive EIBI (the behavior program we use) is, we have two year olds in a classroom with one on one attention for the entire day year round. We do what are known as discrete trials. In one sitting there may be anywhere from 5-30 trials. These might include things like following a simple command, identifying a picture, or repeating a sound. Everything from reading, to object recognition, to behavior is addressed in this way. It takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. So nobody is "hiding behind" a diagnosis. I guarantee you, if you took any one of these kids and put them in a classroom without any kind of appropriate intervention, they are going to react this way.

I was disappointed to see posters on another board siding with the teacher! One person had the audacity to suggest she was "protecting the other 14 children" by having the entire class publicly ridicule the boy. This is precisely why I even though I am getting a degree in Sp. Ed I want to be a regular classroom teacher. Kids with special needs need an advocate in the regular classroom. I don't care how bad his behavior was, you get help, you do not do what she did. Whatever happened to common sense? I hope they fire her and never let her near a child again.

I did not say to spank the kids that really have ADD or Autism. I said there are too many "parents" out there that don't discipline their children, then when the child grows up acting out, they claim s/he has ADD when all the child really needs is a good spanking. There are way too many kids/teens/young adults that have never had the joy of having a paddle on their butt, they get "time out" so they think they can do whatever they want and get away with it. Now again I want to make sure you understand I am NOT saying to spank the kids that actually do have a problem. I am saying that parents need to stop with the "I'm afraid to spank my child" crap and pick up a belt.




I had a woman come into a video store I worked at. her little boy (about 4-5 years old) would run around knocking movies off the shelves. I would go around and pick them up. After 3 weeks of this (2-3 days a week) I had enough. I asked the woman if she not let her son do that. She turned to me and said "He's only a child" to which I replied "And your only his parent so you should teach him right from wrong."

While I do not agree with spanking (my behavior mod background coming through) I do believe in disciplining children. Thanks for the clarification! A follow up article did state that the son has been officially diagnosed with Autism and ADHD.

I think you could do permanent damage to a kid by making them stand in front of the class and having them all tell them why he's hated. The teacher is supposed to be someone he can trust, not someone who quite literally tosses him to the wolves and encourages them to tear him apart. Ok, so the kid's behavior was disruptive and maybe he needed to be removed from the class... but if he really is Autistic, then in all likelihood it wasn't that he was deliberately trying to be a nuisance. He probably already thought they hated him if he was having that much trouble getting along with the other kids. Re-enforcing that belief by having every kid in the class say why they didn't like him... well that's just cruel. Way to turn an already socially anxious kid into a complete basket case that is.

I'd like to give the two kids who voted for him to stay a candy bar tho. It takes allot of guts and character to do the right thing when an authority figure (the teacher) is basicaly telling you not to. Having them all say why they didn't like the kid before the vote, sends a pretty clear message to the kids voting that the teacher wants him gone.

Well, part of the problem is all we have to go on is the mothers word based on what her 5 year old told her. There was not enough evidence to charge her with anything.

The school is investigating it so before people breakout the torches and pitchforks, maybe people should wait and see if that woman's story is any where close to accurate.

I mean how many times have SG come up and claimed you or Disney as a whole "ruined their vacation" when you did nothing out of line? It could very well be the same type of thing..

I'm thinking this story has too many details to be made up by an autistic 5 year old, I read the article and I don't see a denial by anyone that it didn't happen....
In my experience it would be very easy to stonewall investigators, and it really doesn't surprise me that the teacher and the school district wouldn't have any official reprimand. I took a complaint up to state level about our school district about an incident with our son and how Special Education Law had not been followed and resulted in a serious situation for my son. I documented everything and presented it to the state, and of course the District said it never happened the way I said it did. I did present the matter to a local autism advocate, though, and she actually formed a commitee in regard to the interactions/outcomes for persons with disabilities/school/police
that got everyone's attention, so in effect I did get some peace with the situation and a hopefully better future for him and others.

Really? Look up "The McMartin preschool trial" to see how much detail 4 and 5 year olds can make up..

And also from that trial you will see that it really makes no difference if the accused deny it or not and how the mere allegations of abuse can ruin peoples lives regardless of the outcome of the trial.
