Oh and I was able to get registered at Photoshop, finally figured it out! I am teaching myself slowly, but surely how to do things on this brain machine! Still I had already flipped, printed and had my transfers made in Paint, by the time I figured out Photoshop!

Maybe I should call The Geek Squad to come in for a couple hour tutorial on basic stuff on the pooter! Might well be worth the cost. I come from the generation that did not use or need computers and never went back to school to learn them! I went to Vet tech school instead. I am finding that I NEED to know this durn thing backwards and forwards and inside out!!!!!

You should check your local community college's! A lot of them have either free, or very cheep courses on basic computer usage! I helped a friend of mine teach one at a senior center, and it didn't take long before they were doing all kinds of stuff!

We ended up showing them how to upload and crop photos, then import it into a greeting card to print out and fold to a standard card!

I just finished building a new shuttle for DW as she needed more ability (dual processor and upgraded 3D video) for her sewing and embroidery programs that run her sewing machines!!

I have an older computer as well, four years old, and it needs more memory. Today I discovered, in a roundabout manner, that Microsoft offers free online classes inAccess, Powerpoint, Excel, Word, etc., so I need to check those out. I don't think you can do that on a Mac. And Susi, if you think you're a dinosaur, you should see my mom--she bought herself a laptop, and is very slowly learning how to use the thing. Guess she figured if I had so much fun on my computer, she could learn to use one too. After all, T.V., cards, music and reading get pretty boring after awhile.

Although there are differences in Powerpoint, Excel and Word written for the Mac, the classes should work for both platforms.

LOL, at TV, cards, music and reading getting boring...I don't think I could get bored reading!!!! But knowing the pooter IS important in this world. You can't away with not knowing it anymore.

As long as we're already on the subject of elderly computers, a couple of thoughts:

First, WDW sells 3-year-old machines at Property Control for $50 each, without keyboard, mouse or monitor. They usually have keyboards and mice for $1 each, and CRT monitors have been going for $10. (Haven't seen any flat screens there yet.) The units there last week had a (wiped) hard drive and floppy, but no CD reader. All are sold as is, but they are pulled from people's desks after three years, just because HP supplies new ones, so the chances they'll work are excellent.

Second, I'm organizing a program with the local Linux users group to recycle old systems. We wipe the drive, swap out dead parts, clean them, install Linux and a suite of software, and donate most to schools and non-profit orgs. We sell a few, usually for $50 *with* keyboard and mouse, to raise funds to buy parts to fix the rest. (And we can tell you where in town to get a monitor for under $20.) If you'd like to donate your old one, we can put it to good use *and* give you a tax write-off!

You may not think that a recycled computer would be worth much, and it's true it would suck at running the latest games, but if you just want to surf the web, send email, write some letters to your offline friends, they're great. By purging Windoze and installing Linux, the effective speed is nearly doubled, the reliability is way up, and the software is all free.

Anybody in town needs help with getting, fixing, or disposing of a system, let me know.

I have a 10 year old box that is currently my primary name server and mail server. It also handles DHCP and an internal website for me and my wife. It also graphs my switch, router and as soon as I get the mibs in place it'll graph usage on itself as well as my other server.

Linux is getting easier to use, if you like a bit more robustness then FreeBSD is a good choice as well, both make an old box scream.
