We had a big Kona (south) storm on Tuesday. A friend was trying to move his 45 foot tour boat to a protected anchorage and lost power.



The starboard hull is toast. The boat is probably a total loss.

Something similar happened to a boat moored in front of a friends place in Bonaire. She broke free at about 4pm. We couldnt get her off the beach, and around 8 Pm there was a sickening crack as the hull split. It was so sad.

Stop that. You guys are making a grown man cry. That looks like a formerly beautiful cat. Can't see enough of the other to tell, but what can I say? It sails. That inherently makes it beautiful.

And this is where I had better ask Hobie to not post pictures of ugly sailboats. I am sure there has to be one out there somewhere, and I am going to remain ignorant of the fact that it exists as long as I can.

Here's an ugly sailboat. No stays, square rigged, rotating mast, I could go on and on.

It's one of the Coasties watching it break up.

I heard yesterday a salvage company placed a boat offshore and hooked a cable to it to try and pull it off the beach. That didn't work so the chainsaws did the deal.

Yeah, it took several attempts back in '99 in Coos Bay, OR with this boat:

After a couple days on the beach with no help from people, it looked like this:


They firebombed it with napalm to get rid of the fuel, did it again when only one tank was burned off and the others remained, towed the foreward 4/5ths out to sea and the rope broke depositing it back on the beach 80 miles north and 14 hours after the break. They dislodged it again, took it out to sea and sunk it with explosives, bullets and a torpedo.

Here is a video. And another of it burning. Here is a video of it finally being blown to smithereens... Wait. No. Sorry. Sinking it didn't work the first time, either, and so they had to call in a submarine to put a torpedo into the hull.

Geez, what a cluster****.

Did I mention that it was 2008 before they finally dismantled the stern and took it away?

Now then. Let's take a look at a shipwreck from 1906, the Peter Iredale. A sailing ship. Left on the beach to attract tourists for over a hundred years now. Whereas a tanker would probably not. It would just be ugly.
