Phone companies hate dial-up data users because they eat up switching system facilities. Most switching systems are graded under the assumption that each user will only be on the phone for an average of 700 seconds (7 CCS) per hour. Dial-up data destroys that assumption.

Plus, data over voice transmission systems is the crappiest way to go. Dial-up claims to be able to run at 56 kbps. The best I've ever seen was 36 kbps and there were lots of error correction retransmits.

I don't know it that point is really moot, I had to use dial up on some travel work laptops when on the road. (yeah, they didn't allow wireless) and most of the time it was pretty crappy. I learned to just do the minimum of e-mail, because it was so frustrating from going from high speed access, to snails pace!
