Re: Adventures In Fruity Drink Land
We had a greyhound rescue on the Mainland. Mac was a very good boy but he had his moments.
The rescues really get screwed for all of their racing lives. They're fed crap, treated like shit, and discarded in some umbelievable ways when they can no longer win.
Maverick looks like a great friend.

I don't understand why they get discarded that way. Mind you, I don't want to either. But you would think they would run better well fed (I mean nutritiously, not high-calorie), last and win longer.
Then, it's not like the owners don't know that the rescues exist. Just give the dogs to them, no questions asked.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

This is totally why we live in the North. We did have a six-inch millipede once, however apparently those don't bite. Speak not to me of brown recluse spiders.hobie16 wrote: We tore the bed apart and when we pulled the mattress back out crawled a eight inch long finger bitter.
Glad to hear you're feeling better. Those centipede bites are nasty!
We totally had that carpet in our place in Louisiana. Also, a cat the same color as the carpet, except for an orange streak down her back leg. Talk about stealth kitty! Although she was more likely to cover it with strewn kernels and tassles and cobs and other vegetable matter from the once-lovely centerpiece than shredded toilet paper.DonutGoddess wrote:That picture reminds me of when I came home to this!

The sad story behind the greyhound rescue groups is they can only take a small percentage of the dogs available. Their resources are finite and so are the people that want to adopt.Big Wallaby wrote:I don't understand why they get discarded that way. Mind you, I don't want to either. It's horrible what these loveable dogs are born into and what they mostly face when they fail to deliver on the track.
My wife became involved in the greyhound owner's group in Santa Clara County, California. It was very common to see owners with as many as five dogs. They did every thing they could to save as many dogs as possible. Part of that was the group taking their dogs to public places and pet stores to show them off and get more people to adopt.
They did an annual picnic and there would be hundreds of dogs in attendance. In all the ones we attended there was never even one fight among the dogs as they were so mellow.

The group we got Maverick and his older female cousin, Cobra, from does a summer picnic with 50+ hounds. This weekend is their Holiday Bazaar so the hounds can do some shopping.
A large group of greyhounds is not a problem untilll someone thinks it's cute to bring their tiny "floor sweeper" dog to one of these events.
Then they wonder why some dogs get aggitated. That's what I call a SPOT, Stupid Pet Owner Trick.

They are nice dogs. My neighbor has one and we had one at the vet's office I worked at for a summer. My neighbor's dog had all sorts of foot problems when they got him, hopefully he is better.Near Philly wrote:The group we got Maverick and his older female cousin, Cobra, from does a summer picnic with 50+ hounds. Re: Adventures In Fruity Drink Land
When I was growing up, my older sister Susan had part ownership of a greyhound named Ike--short for FCh. (Field Champion) Vulcan's Ikon. He was lure coursed and shown--once Susan got to take him to Westminister, but he didn't win anything. He could be a character at times. He fathered two litters of pups, one male pup from the first litter looked so much like him he was named Ikon's Image--went by Image. Remarkably, he was from a litter of ten pups, born to a 15 year old mother and 14 year old father. His first litter was of ten pups, I don't know about the second because the female was brought down from Canada. We had the Gazehound magazines Susan and Ike were photographed in, but after Mom died they got thrown away. I don't even know if that magazine even exists today. All that was back in the 70s. Anyway, Susan had to sell her half ownership back to the owner when it got too hard for her to find a decent place to live that would allow large dogs.

What was originally described as someone streaking turned out to be a dancer in a malo running behind Hillary Clinton for the nightly torch-lighting ceremony.
