I used to use Avast until it let through a bad virus that it took the Geek Squad to remove. On their recommendation I bought Kaspersky and have been well protected since. It has prevented my computer from being infected by some bad viruses more than once.

The money I saved, and more, using Avast was lost to removing the virus it let through. In the long run I'll save money using Kaspersky.

Speaking of rumors. An unamed cast member told me that the Carousel of Progress was going to be donated to the Smithsonian and that Hollywood Studios was next in line for a couple of ride additions, after they finish the Fantasy Land remodeling.

Since we're sharing, my answers to virus protection is to run Linux. That, plus an IPCop box on the home network. IPCop is free, nearly idiot-proof, and runs great on my old Pentium I 350MHz clunker.

As for virus security, I am using Microsoft's Security Essentials on Windows 7. I haven't had any virus problems with this setup.

What is ipcop?

That's a long version, but of course entirely accurate.

Short verstion: It's an operating system you load into your old computer. You put your old box between the Big Bad Internet and your shiny new not-yet-corrupted computer, and it blocks a whole lot of badstuff. (But not malware hidden in email, you still have to not click on the stupid stuff yourself.)

And by "between", I mean the cable out of your modem goes to one port on the IPCop box, and a cable from the other port goes to your computer or router. You can't just sit it on the table. No offense, but I assume that at least one reader here is a Stupid Computer User.

Because all the IPCop box does is ignore bad packets, an old slow machine is fine. I use an old 300MHz Pentium to serve a network with a couple of 3GHz computers and four 1GHz machines. We can't see any sign of slowdown on account of the IPCop.

More than this probably needs to go to PM or email.

That seems to be my best current option. Thanks.

I can't tell if people are pulling legs or if something really is going on with the deal. Apparently people are reporting (even to me, the most lowly blogger on earth) that something is up. The closure may not happen on 4/15 either by delay or complete cancellation.

Has anyone here heard anything?
Totally off topic and I apologize. Darksin, are you a MLP:FiM Fan???

I don't normally put in my 2 cents, but I am a majoring in computer security and forensics. Those of you not running anti-virus on your MACs, you are running a huge risk. Hackers are now looking at attacking MACs because there is such a misconception that they are completely safe. They are not. Take a look at the flashback bug that has been infecting MACs and Apple took 2-3 months before releasing a patch. Hackers are figuring anyone purchasing a MAC has a certain amount of disposable income that most PC users probably don't have because of the price difference between the two.

Please run anti-virus on your MACs. I will now step off my soapbox.
