Ex because I haven't been on a ship, not boat, since 1994.

Since I was also on a wooden minesweeper, Iron Men - Wooden Ships, I guess I also qualify as a wet salty iron ass airborne stink pot!! :D:

I never had to use any but I seem to remember a fibrous material in the seams of the hull in the unpainted areas like the bilge and below the paint locker and in the chain locker. I was a quartermaster so I didn't spend a lot of time below decks but we had to be familiar with all ship systems for damage control purposes. We were told the ship could burn down to the waterline in 13 minutes so everyone was highly trained in damge control.
The cotton I was intimately familiar with was Nevr Dull. There was a lot of brass to keep polished on the bridge. The bosuns had to keep the main capstan shiny on the foc'sle. All brass. A lot of ships had painted theirs but they never looked as good as ours. :)
I think there should be a Navy smiley at this point.

That's pretty much it. Caulking cotton came in a roll. When the seams were recaulked the old caulk and cotton were removed, new cotton was pushed into the seams, and caulk was put over the top of it.
When I was in Sea Scouts we'd careen the boat instead of hauling it out. Careening is when you move the boat over a shallow bottom at high tide, let the tide go out so the hull is resting on the bottom, do whatever work needs to be done, and then let the rising tide lift the boat so you can move it to deeper water.
Careening is mostly done on sand. Our Sea Scout base was on a dredged harbor so we got to do it in the mud. Gooey was okay but that stuff really stunk. We worked very fast.
