Re: WDW CM Jailed for Skimming Credit Card Info
It's been a long day so let me get this straight. If I dispute a charge on my card, the card issuer will pretty much back me up. Now,if I refuse to show the vendor ID, tough twinkies for them? The card issuer says they have to take it?
And yet the card issuers are bitching about losing $$ and raising % rates to justify those losses.

Yes. If you dispute a charge, the card company will pretty much back you. And yes, if you refuse to show the merchant is supposed to sell to you anyway. If a scammer uses your credit card and refuses to show ID, and you dispute it - the merchant gets paid, you don't pay and the credit card company eats the fraud amount.darph nader wrote:It's been a long day so let me get this straight. The amount of losses vs. transactions and profit is an interesting number. I was teaching a class at VISA's HQ in San Mateo. I saw in the paper that they'd suffered $14,000,000 in losses over the last quarter. i brought that up in class and the students started laughing. One explained that VISA had moved over $4,000,000,000 over their network in the last 24 hours. To them $14 mil was a rounding error.

I wasn't talking about a fake card. I said stolen. There's nothing to stop them using my credit card if they steal it without ID checks.dawn wrote:It's much, much, much harder to properly fake a credit card than it is to fake an out of state ID.

Thank you for all the info Dawn... and BTW welcome to SGT if it hadn't been mentioned before (Bad Marsupials).
For the record the last person to refuse to show ID (or even the card) had a mag recorder in their car. Our people are very good at what they do and have the officers cell phones on speed dial. We (myself included) have a very good relationship with our local law enforcement officers. Although Scabies Girl might have ruined that a bit, but that's another story...

Re: WDW CM Jailed for Skimming Credit Card Info
What amuses me is the difference between Disney policy and Disney practice. Despite my having been trained on the standard CC procedures, including refusing cards signed "See ID", my managers have made it exceedingly clear to me that I will accept any card offered that scans correctly, no matter the absence of signature, mismatch of numbers, or anything short of blatantly counterfeit cards, and I suspect their definition of "acceptable" includes cards drawn on cardboard with crayons.
A few times I've been handed cards that smell wrong or failed to scan, and each time when I started asking questions or reached for the telephone the guests have either come up with cash or run off.
Heaven knows, the Mouse would land on me for taking bad plastic if they thought they could. I suspect Mickey has better lawyers than the clearing services -- that or they consider the fraud rate to be a rounding error, as above.

The guys in my class were all network techs. I imagine their security department has a different view of fraud.Zazu wrote:... they consider the fraud rate to be a rounding error, as above.

Um... her post count is low, but she first posted back in 2007. I'm pretty sure that pre-dates the Marsupial Welcoming Committee.CujoSR wrote:Thank you for all the info Dawn... and BTW welcome to SGT if it hadn't been mentioned before (Bad Marsupials). ...
Still, Dawn, I don't want you to be deprived, and you are welcome here, so...
