Yep, DM, I was a real Hollywood type baby! My folks moved us up to Northern California later. They did not like the southern part of the state and my dad had old WWII buddies that were living in the Bay Area and could turn him towards jobs. They had moved out to California from Milwaukee in the early 1950's, towing a house trailer and I was a bun in the oven. They stopped in the LA area to have me and decide if that was where they wanted to stay. So I am old too. :p:

I have admitted several times that while younger than dirt, I do recall when first we mixed it with water to create mud.

They are also called Santa Ana winds by the white folks. The reason for them is that there was big high pressure system sitting in the 4 corners area in southeast Colorado and the winds started to blow west from the desert. That is where they usually come from.
We have had record highs here in Denver. One slight snowfall that was barely a spit, but 70's today. Very unusual for us this time of year, though I do remember my first trip here in 1999 in November and it was 80 degrees around the 10th of the month. So it can happen, but not very often. It is warm and all the high pressure system warmth is moving around down there....
I hope it is getting better now. I heard the marine layer was supposed to come in and the winds were to die down and that would help the firefighters get a handle. Over 200 homes lost and I hope no one hurt. We have not heard on our news. I did not watch CNN today. I did hear "Reverend Jim's" 11 million dollar estate was completely destroyed. So sad for so many folks. I did hear that one of the fires was human started. I hope they hang the bastard by his nads when they catch him.
Love to all down in the So Cal area!

I've heard 2 firefighters were injured, but I presume they weren't serious. One fire was started by a car's catalytic converter, the other by a group of students who had a campfire (how'd they get a fire permit in these conditions?), and they thought they had it put out, but the wind picked up a glowing ember and that's what started it. I think they should bring back those Smokey Bear commercials about the proper way to put out a campfire. Check out Smokey's website--I just do a browser search--it's cool!

Yeah, those students did not have a permit, and were "camping" on a vacant property, they left their "camp" about 4 a.m., and the only way anyone found out is that someone phoned in a tip.

Pretty Careless , but hubby and I almost started The Great Ocean Beach Fire!

We had dumped our extinguished (we thought) used barbecue coals in the outdoor trashcan at our friend's house in San Diego, then left town. We didn't find out until MONTHS later that the neighbors had found a pretty nice little trash fire not long after we left!

Amazingly, they let us vacation at their beach house again....

Now of course we are very paranoid about the barbecue coals!
