Actually, you were right the first time. The English name of the language is Irish. To quote from the English language version of the Irish Constitution, Article 8:

[INDENT]8.1 - The Irish language as the national language is the first official language.
8.2 - The English language is recognised as a second official language.

The name of the Irish language in Irish is Gaeilge. Gaelic is an English language adjective that means "pertaining to the Gaels", ie the people of Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. When used without qualifiers to describe a language it can mean any of the three languages Irish, Scottish Gaelic, or Manx, or to describe similarities between the three.
