We had decided that as parents we were done with VMK for our family the day before they announced the closing- we watched our child cry over it too many times.
And good for you for "pulling the plug" as GP has so nicely used. If a child cries over a VIDEO GAME, then it's certainly time to focus on better and newer things. No need for a long letter, shoulda just stopped the game plain and simple. Children elsewhere cry over hunger, being cold, or not having a home to go to.

If I had known that VMK was going to close I wouldn't have written the letter. But I for one am a big believer in feedback- good and bad- for Disney especially as a large entertainment company. So I don't regret the time spent in writing it.
In response to your post, Sarah, I just wanted to address
why my child cried over the game. It's not because her priorities in life are not straight- in fact this is a child who, in the past, went into her own closet, took out her entire mint My Little Pony collection and sent almost all of it to children in Mississippi at a daycare center where they had lost everything to Hurricane Katrina. She hand wrote and tied a note to every single individual pony- telling the children that she cared and that she was thinking of them. This was more than 50 ponies. This is a child who still talks about that storm every single day (and we live way far away from where it happened) and wonders how people have forgotten when it was so terrible.
She cried over the quest because her papi spent so much time trying to help her pass the pirates portion that when they ended the quest early without warning- she felt bad that
he never finished it
'because of me'.
She didn't feel bad she didn't get the stuff- she felt bad that because he had helped her, that my husband didn't! Of course he told her that he was so disgusted with the way the quest had been mismanaged that he wasn't going to finish it anyway. He spent most of the time he did on it trying to help her and other friends through the pirates portion.
This is also the same child who, when people were talking about trying to get the closing of VMK covered on CNN, turned to me and said "Mom, there's a war going on. People are dying. Kids are starving in Africa. Aren't there more important things for them to put on the news than a videogame?"
I've rarely seen a more aware and compassionate child than mine. Bragging? Maybe a little. But yeah, I'm a proud mom. You bet I am. My child has been a giver to other children since she was a toddler, and she has helped me on many a charity drive that I did before my health totally tanked. So believe me, this is not a kid who cried because she is spoiled and doesn't have a clue. This is a kid who cried for others- and for her friends who didn't get to finish a race that was not fair because they moved the finish line halfway thru.
Sorry that was so long- but in light of the tone of your post, I felt I needed to respond.

I signed up for VMK a few months ago and went there maybe twice. Never understood how the durn thing worked. It was confusing to me. I won't miss it, but I know many people had a lot of fun there and it looked very interesting. Sad for those who enjoyed it and did not abuse the game.
I never could involved in on line games. I guess I am just not into them. I have not even heard of half of these you are taking about. I know the son of a friend of ours is deep into Halo or whatever the next step in that series is. The son was telling me about it one day and he sounded like the teacher from Peanuts. Muwah...Muwah...Muwah... while my eyes glazed over.... I just could not follow it. I guess I am lucky in that I don't know the internet that well.
Ralphie likes online games and admits it, but says he will never get involved again as he was when he was younger. He used to write games for computer so was always playing and building. He was also one of those D and D people...heeheehee...He was really into it and a friend of his who got married a couple years ago had a D and D wedding!

They had an ongoing game at the reception and all the folks that were involved in that particular group were there. Ralph has not played D and D in years and he is not really into it anymore. I would be okay with him playing again if he really wanted to. I know it can be very involved.
He does not like the new stuff so much. We both like the ones like Vixen posted. The Christmas elf game and the Travel game. I would like to know moe of those, where to find them. Those simple ones, not the ones where you have to get an identity and play for months and months! I also like solitaire that came with the computer program. I play that when I get really bored which is not real often anymore since I found Disney sites and particularly THIS Disney message board! :D:
Hi, MY name is Susi and I am an SGT addict! LOL! And Meez is about as far as I go to entertain myself online...LOL!

HAHA Susi, the Muwah, muwah, muwah thing describes son # 2 perfectly when he talks about computer games to me

I think a lot of kids lose all their social skills from playing games so much!

Bru, Your daughter ahs one fantastic head on her shoulders! Cheers to her for being the generous individual she is.
To me, in a world where TV shows such as My Super Sweet 16 (a repulsive TV show where spoiled girls cry if their new Mustang convertable was the wrong color and throw huge fits if the balloons for their 2 million birthday party are rose pink instead of blush pink) are the norm for kids to watch and emulate - I had truly believed that the youth of the upcoming generation have been damaged for ever! Thanks for giving me the whole story on your daughter's tearful VMK quest. She truly deserves to be rewarded!
Let her know that she is too good for a silly game. Way too good. With VMK soon being gone, I'm certain that she can give her energies to a better hobby. She in Girl Scouts? She sounds ideal for it.

I suppose the only games I ever got into was Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (when I was like 14) and old school Sims (college). But even then, unlike my WOW buddies - I could easily miss a few days of playing them.
Games are not bad things at all. But when it replaces actual social interaction, that's when it get worry some. I read of a girl who loved D&D, but hated going to meets as - in her words - "Filled with 40 year old unmarried men who still live with their mothers or teenage boys who will grow up to BE 40 year old unmarried men who live with their mothers."
My WOW runnaway friend is inviting me to go to DragonCon with her. She says because I like fairies, princesses, and fantasy things I will easily fit in. I have a feeling that I will stick out like a sore thumb. I love Tinkerbell and Princess Jasmine, fantasy to me is a day at the magic kingdom.

She doesn't need to be rewarded for being a good kid and that's the best part, she doesn't expect to be. I try to teach her that being good and doing right by people is its own reward. That, and she seems to believe in Karma LOL she's seen it in action in her young lifetime!
She's not a scout but she is into martial arts- she is a junior black belt and even teaches some classes to the younger kids. She loves to read too- it's hard to keep her in new stuff to read! By the time she comes back from her trip with her dad and step mom she will have been off VMK for weeks.
We both hate the My Sweet 16 attitude, she says she can't believe the brats on that show- so I know exactly the type you're talking about!
Thanks for all the kind words everybody- I have to run! We fly out in the early AM.
PS My daughter will be in WDW in about a week with her dad and step mom- so if you see a polite child it might be her LOL ;)
