Re: Christmas Shopping Madness
Honestly, I'd take him to Guitar Center and let him hold some sticks and tap them on the practice pads (they probably won't let you use them on the kits) and see what he is comfortable with. I use 5bs, which is what my favorite drummer (Lars Ulrich of MetallicA) uses, but found that I liked them the best. I also prefer nylon tips over wood. I've not noticed a different in sound, but the nylon tips don't get chipped off like the wood does, at least not for me. I never got any formal training, so much of my choice was influenced by the drummers I admired when I was younger. I like Pro-mark Japanese White Oak with nylon tips, which are probably my favorite sticks. I also have a pair of Ahead drumsticks, which are aluminum (yes, I have broken one). I'd use them more, but I am too lazy to replaces the covers :) Zildjian is the way to go for cymbals. I do have one Sabian, but it was used, a awesome price and I was looking for another crash. I use remo on my tom and bass, and evans on my snare (which is a Lars Ulrich custom snare, the diamond plate one, gift from my wife one Christmas, it is awesome!). When I need to replace heads again I may test out some evans stuff. I use tama shells, mixed hardware, but I love my Iron Cobra double pedal!Kwahati wrote:Hey, here's a question for you: my roommate is thinking he might want to learn to play drums for real. I got him a Zildjian stick bag and a couple pairs of Zildjian sticks. I read that most beginning drummers use size 5A. Is there anything else my roommate should try to see if he likes the feel of it? A different size or shape? I saw they make "rock" sticks as well as all sorts of different tips. Do you prefer nylon or wood? Is that up to the individual drummer's feel or do they make different sounds on a real kit? I know my drummer in my last band only used wood sticks and brushes... Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! (I'll probably end up going and getting him a kit from a Guitar Center after Christmas sale...at least I know enough to get Zildjian cymbals and some decent heads...my last drummer only used Evans G2 coated heads so I've grown to love their sound!)
You could wrap it in barbie paper, I wouldn't care ;)susislicker wrote:ktulu wrote:
And what paper do you want me to wrap that XBox360 in? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! We have a PS2 and Ralph has NEVER taken it out of the box. I got it for him when they came out and he has never used it. In fact it is sitting in storage now. When we move, all the stuff in storage that we don't really NEED, goes to charity!!!! We have too much dang stuff!Big Christmas hugs to the Ktulu family!!!! :D:

Huh. I don't know the sticks you speak of, but I've already found them on Musician's Friend. I think, when I get him a kit, I'll just get him a few different sets of sticks so he can see what he likes. I knew, for now, he'd just like something in Black and Zildjian would be a brand he's heard of!hobie16 wrote:Promark 747's are the bomb! Seriously, I've used them for years. Smaller sticks just don't seem to have the impact the '47's do. Can Neil Peart be wrong?

Oh, I'm right there with you. I'm all about pawn shop finds for first time instruments. I have a good idea of what I'm looking for and at. You can't be around musicians as much as I have been without learning a *few* things... And I also learn well through trial and error. About four years ago for Christmas, Jen told me Chris really wanted a BC Rich Virgin guitar. It was beautiful and cost a little bit of cash. The thing is, he never played it. Jen and I couldn't figure out why until one day I picked it up. My exact words were: "Holy Crap! This is way too heavy for you isn't it?!?!" Now he has a little lightweight Ibanez that he loves! (And he got me my baby: my SG!) So, yeah, unless I can find a blazing hot deal from Musician's Friend or Guitar Center, it's a pawn shop for everything except brass, sticks, throne (so he can pick whatever style he likes best), heads, and of course, I'll pay big money for a very nice new cowbell! :p:hobie16 wrote:Don't rush out and buy a set until the "wanna be" drummer shows staying power...

Ah, I just got a tee shirt last night at Spencer gifts and it has a pic of Christopher Walken on it and says "Don't make me go Walken on you!" I love Christopher Walken. One of my favorite things he has done is the Fat Boy Slim Video. It is awesome....Go to Youtube and search "Weapon of Choice" by FatBoy Slim, I cannot seem to post the link to it.GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:Ya Gotta have more cowbell!! Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Truly classsic and so funny. He is quite a character. He used to always play these weird roles and then someone figured out just how funny the guy was and now he does more than just weird roles. I did say that I love him, right? ;) We have the best of Christopher Walken on SNL DVD. It is so good!!!!!!!GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:You must have REALLY enjoyed "The Continental" bits he did on SNL??
