Stupid Guest Tricks

As far as I know, all the boats in front of me had guests on them. I'd be pissed if the boat of SG's in front of me got to see storage and I didn't ;)

LOL, storage really isn't that cool. It basically looks like a warehouse/garage with a big winding flume. The flume is lined with cleats that the boats are tied to for the night. Then maintenance looks at every boat each night and they are tagged green, for ready, and red, for not ready. At the Land we also have chargers, similar to those used for golf carts to plug the boats into. This charges the audio systems for the boats. Also there are lifts used to raise boats out of the water to do maintenance on. Though one really cool thing about the land storage area is it is kind of a graveyard. There is an image vehicle back there, a couple of AAs that were being repaired, and during the major portion of SSE's refurb the triangle spacers were kept back behind the storage area. I also got to see the old MAPO audio cabinet from SSE as well as some old show lighting equipment that was removed from the attraction. Also back there is an old 20,000 leagues sub and jungle cruise boat. Those are really cool to see.

I've seen the sub, and I can confirm that as of a couple nights ago, it was still there. I still want to take it home.

I'm curious about the "more deaths at Disney" stat. My first thought was, since Disney has way more guests, of course there'd be more deaths. Anyone know what the figure is on deaths per number of visitors?

I don't know any numbers but every single death or serious injury of a guest on a Disney attraction I've ever heard of was either due to a pre-existing condition or because the guest did something extremely stupid, like try to leave the ride vehicle in the middle of the ride. I've never heard of one caused by equipment failures or CMs not doing their jobs.

Back in, I believe, 2001 I went on the Keys tour. As part of the tour we rode Pirates. Our boat stopped and we saw boats being pushed out of storage and onto the ride. We could see the Pirates CM and a little bit of the storeroom through the open doorway. An unplanned backstage peek and a little bit of unplanned magic. It was kinda cool.

Only a few have been caused by mechanical failure/negligence. The Sailing ship columbia incident, BTMR, and California Screamin'. Universal has had less, which is not surprising. Considering they are a much smaller company. Though some of theirs are pretty disturbing as well. A man fell from the loading platform while boarding the mummy attraction and died in surgery. A woman's fingers were crushed in the safety bars of the ET ride, making her lose the use of two of her fingers. But these are all since 2003. Which makes me think they were just not forced to report them. Who knows.

I'm glad you got to see a little backstage magic. I know some guests really get a kick out of seeing me run around like a crazy person storaging out a boat. But its ok, it isn't something you see everyday!

I got to see Space Mountain (DL) storage once. We had just been loaded but then for some reason they stopped the car just out of the load area and pushed us into the maintenance bay. It was cool to see the procedure, but I did wonder why they decided to pull the car and in particular after they had loaded. (Actually, it probably would have been easier to off load us immediately rather than escorting us out of the service bay--but I didn't mind the glimpse backstage).

Cool, they probably discouraged picture taking (WITHOUT FLASH!!)

I've done the Backstage Magic tour at WDW earlier, so I already knew that whipping out a camera would be frowned upon--besides I didn't want to qulify as a SG! :D: Actually, I may have not even had a camera on me that day. I hate trying to take my SLR on the rides and I didn't have a decent compact digital at the time.

Now I want to see backstage at The Land AND POTC at DL now...

See, I'm a geek, so these things excite me. Like the time we were evac'd from POTC at DL and walked through a backstage area to get back outside and then through the exit back onto the ride (improper loading caused the boat to not go over the first drop, which caused the fun). It was fun to see area's guests aren't normally supposed to see.
