Actually, it was pretty unique... the Dead seemed to be following us. Once we stayed up late to see the band appear on the Tomorrow show with Tom Snyder (yes, I know this makes me incredibly old) so Gregg could point out his brother. It was really entertaining to hear him try to explain the Grateful Dead to the Mennonite couple we were staying with that evening.

At the end of the tour we had a huge finale concert in the Long Beach Arena. Backstage there was a large sign showing the next event there: the Grateful Dead in concert, two days later!

So how did he explain them to the Mennonite couple?

I wish I'd had a tape recorder handy, because I don't remember the details. But I do remember the tone... brief, mumbled, and semi-embarrassed.
