Don't knock the Government Retirement programs. They are probably the best employee benefit programs anywhere.Whazzup wrote:Another (former) government employee here, eligible for membership in DENSA.
Counting my FERS Retirement, my survivor benefit from Judy's CSRS Retirement, and my Social Security I get over $67,000 per year. Plus over 1/3 Million $ in TSP. And my health insurance program and costs are the same as an active Federal employee. Also, I have free term life insurance which is currently decreasing on a monthly basis, but will not go below $30,000.
Also, the year Judy died she had 45 days in hospitals, including 9 in ICU, over a ten month span and out out of pocket expense for her was capped at $6,000.
And Judy and I met in Mensa.

Re: How long will you live?
I just retired after 38 years under the old CSRS system, so will have the offset if I want social security. You did very well in TSP, Cheshire. I worry about some of the FERS folks whose retirement depends on how the stock market does. Could be scary.
Yes, the health benefits aren't bad compared to private sector.

Well it they are smart, they listen to the warnings to start moving TSP funds to "G" protected when they are nearing retirement! thy sven sent out in-house e-mails to that effect for us.Whazzup wrote:I just retired after 38 years under the old CSRS system, so will have the offset if I want social security. That's true - although it is tempting to leave more in the other funds and watch those dollars add up quickly. But lately they've been going down even more quickly.GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:Well it they are smart, they listen to the warnings to start moving TSP funds to "G" protected when they are nearing retirement! thy sven sent out in-house e-mails to that effect for us.
