Even if you rent a bicycle at FtW you have to sign a lease with such resumption of responsabilities. The potential for injury to bystanders is MUCH less for a 50 lb bike than a 300 lb ECV. I could understand if an inadvertant accident happened, but leaving a wake of injuries is grounds for reckless driving. IMHO
There used to be a contract that had to be signed when renting an ECV that basically released Disney from liability in the event of an accident and had the renter agree that they were over 18 and nobody under 18 would be allowed to ride or drive the ECV. Disney corporate legal requires that the Stroller Shop keep these contracts on file for 3 years.

Did anybody actually read those contracts? Nope. We actually had CMs go through each contract during our dead time before opening and highlight the last two paragraphs that said "nobody under 18 on the ECV." Whenever I saw an SG on an ECV with a child on their lap, I would tell them that the child wasn't allowed per the contract they signed. Of course their reaction was "I didn't know that!"

Some days when I was bored I would go through those contracts and highlight words like "death", "dismemberment", "broken bones", etc. just to see if anyone was paying attention. Nobody ever said anything in the 3 years that I did that. :banghead:

I'm now reminded of a guest whose 8 year old daughter was run over by an ECV guest and had to be taken to the hospital. The father came to us the next day and was very civil, understood that it was the SG's fault, not ours, and wanted some more info on ECVs. I'm sure he was looking for information with which to file a lawsuit against the SG. We gave him a copy of the ECV contract and allowed him to take photographs of the ECVs. Never heard the outcome of that one, though.

Backpack man spilled half my coffee, so I gave him the rest of it. (For newbies, I gave it by pouring it into his backpack.)

Now if the ECV woman attacked my feet, I'd make her walk. It would probably bother her a lot more than a wet backpack, and would be far more just.

It's all about justice and balancing the karma, not exacting cruel revenge.

... That's just a fringe benefit.

I have never accidentally run into anyone with my ECV at the parks. I have, at times stopped and had people walk directly into me.

I have, at times, run over people's toes. But my ECV is a three-wheeler and that means they had to be so close that they got their foot under my back wheel.

And from reading your postings, I bet that even tho the injury was not your fault you immediately stopped to express your concern. But the OP mentioned hearing the SG approaching as there was a trail of guests voicing their pain and dismay as multiple people were being injured along the path. Obviously the SG did not stop or even acknowledge that they had caused any distress to those in their path. That is what, IMHO, turned the incident from an accidental event into a criminal assault.

Yep. Over at FtW when the rental agreement for the golf carts is signed, the CM specifically points out and stresses the points about no unlicensed drivers, and that any damage will be the responsability of the renter. But anyone can sit almost anywhere and spot a dozen 4 and 5 yearold drivers in well under a half hour. And without fail when a cart has to be fished out of a canal the renter tries to get out of the damage charge by saying that it was stolen. But the cart being fished out always mysteriously has the key in the slot. And these keys ARE unique to each cart (or close enough to be unique). So either the cart was left unattended with the key in it and thus the damage was due to negligence of the renter, or the cart was taken with permission and damaged by someone trying to drive where they are not supposed to. Either way the charges can be rather high.

I also noticed durring my recent trip that there is a much higher incidence of obvious patrolling by the local Sheriff officers. And they WILL give tickets to underage, unlicensed drivers and that ticket carries the same weight as if they were driving a car on the highway. This can even make it difficult for some young people to get a license when they DO become old enough. And how much do you want to bet that almost every one of the parents say the same thing when confronted by the sheriff. "But officer, I didn't know that it was illegal for my child to drive a golf cart."

Talking about fishing golf carts out of canals...

On my trip in July we stayed at Port Orleans: Riverside and one time as we were walking from the lobby to our room in the Mansions we saw a crowd of people looking at something from the bridge. We look and see that someone had driven a golf cart off of the path and into the river. As these golf carts are only used by cast members I assume that it was a CM that did it. You would expect a CM given a golf cart to drive would know how to drive it.

I don't know what happened after that except that a little while later the cart was out of the water and gone. I guess it could have been stolen by a guest and taken for a joyride or maybe the driver was trying to avoid a SG who stepped in front of the cart. Either way a golf cart wound up in the river.

Once it hit the river bank I could see being unable to stop the golf cart, at this section the bank was grass and had a good slope to it and I doubt a golf cart could get enough traction to make it up that hill from a stand-still, let alone stop any forward momentum down the hill.

You would think so, wouldn't you. Of course, my first time driving one was rather an experience. We had the golf trolleys at Grand Floridian, which were considerably larger than a regular golf cart, and I'd never driven a cart before, big or small. I was a concierge, and was asked to drive some guests to their building since the bellmen were all busy. I met them out back in the trolley, trying to look like I knew what I was doing. Turns out the guests were N'Sync. They made fun of me the whole trip, because I drove like a little old lady on Sunday. Every time a bellman would come down the path from the other direction, I'd get nervous and swerve way over (mostly because the bellmen drove those things like Indy race cars). I almost (I stress almost) ended up in the same situation as the cart at PO. To this day my claim to fame is nearly drowning N'Sync in a golf cart in the Grand Floridian swimming pool!

The difference is that when someone's walking, their foot is flat on the ground. If you get your toes run over that way, it smarts a bit, but there's no real harm done. The way I envisioned it in the original post, if you're sitting on the ground, your foot is sticking up in the air with nothing supporting it, that is when the bones of your foot would be most subject to breaking.

Pardon me for wishing you had. :p:

I can't stand when I am coming around a bend at one of the larger resorts, or when I am driving the Woods buses and there is a golf cart or Pargo taking up the entire road. At FtW, I know they are told to get out of the way of the buses, and about half the time they don't. So there's the person on the back, waving at me, with me "waving" toward the side of the road, and they're laughing because they're stopping a bus. Then you get the ones in the large resorts carrying 16 housekeepers, the person driving doesn't have a clue that there's a bus behind them, topping out at ten miles an hour, and I'm not allowed to pass. About that time, I hear guests talking about the nice bowling pin ahead of us.

Think how famous you'd be if you'd actually drowned them!
