I was set to teach a class in Australia to a group of sales reps and SEs. The woman who set the class up tipped me off that a technical instructor would be attending and he was pissed off because he thought HE should be teaching the class.

Half way through the first day, he asked a question about an obscure transmission method of delivering data. It wasn't the question, but the way it was asked, that set me off. I delivered a five-minute answer that delved into the technology, pluses and minuses, possible markets and customers, and ROI timeframes. I was even able to pull up a presentation I hadn’t used for years and add graphics to my answer.

Finished, I asked, “Did that answer your question?”

He finally stammered, “I wasn’t looking for that much detail.”

The woman who set up the class was in the back of the room doing the fist pumping YES move.

Randy B wrote:It's even better if you can use technical terms and descriptions. So something like this: (note some of this stuff is made up numbers, procedures and references. If a real one is available, substitute, and if no such manual/part number/procedure exists, make it sound right)

A Guest dropped a harness strap into the water that became entangled on a bb356 and also entangled the next vehicle, causing the bb356 to be torn free of it mounting causing an automatic 101. Repeted restart procedures as per manual LP01 did not resolve the conflict and so the appropriate repair and recovery agency was called. They did a signal 87 start to allow the guests currently on hold in the ride to be cycled to unload. And this allowed a complete shut down and drawdown to be performed. So the electricians are currently in the process of clearing fluid from the housings and replacing the bb356 as well as checking all the sensors for damage that may have occured before the harness material tangled strong enough to make a fatal failure of the one circuit. But as soon as the recheck of the entire circuit is completed and the fluid levels can be brought to the design standards, we will run a test run in accordance with SOP. At that time we will return to operation for you. But due to unknown variables of repair and quality testing times I can not give you a hard time for return to operation. Please check back later when we may have a slightly more precise estimate available.

Nothing stumps someone more than when the description sounds logical but since they can't decipher the description they can't argue with it. If the whole thing is said in a tone of voice that says "I'm very happy to answer your question as fully as I can in hopes that it will make your day easier".

Of course if you get one of us who would just turn around and say "and now in english", a simple "it's broke and we're fixing it as fast as we can" (with a big smile).

Of course you might run into me and then the question would be more like: Any estimate of when I should check back in hopes of more information?

You should have said: "Nope...Technical difficulties"

If he asked what they were: "SG's too stoopid to ride!!"

hehehe

A line of skippers blocking off the stairs heading towards Jungle Cruise in the pouring rain with thunder and lightning in the area.

"So, is the ride closed?"
-"No, we just like standing out in this lovely Florida weather talking to people preventing you to come down this way because we're on strike and demanding a longer lunch break because 5 minutes doesn't cut it, and we also don't like these khaki outfits, they make us look like we tell bad jokes, and . . ."
"So . . . are you closed?"
-I look up at lightning and point upwards "That mixed with metal boats floating and water, what do you think?"
"IS THIS RIDE CLOSED?"
-"Yes. And pirates is that way in case you're wondering"
"How did you know I was going to ask you that?"
-"I'm a skipper, I know things :D"

To be fair, I think we sometimes forget how much more we know about rides after working at it. At Disney, many FP queues are kept closed with chains until they are checked, so somebody met with a closed chain could honestly not know the ride is closed. As for a person seeing a ride stuck on a lift and not knowing it's closed, rides stop all the time but it doesn't always mean they're broken. And of course, when somebody finds out the ride is broken their next question will be when will it be fixed. They don't know that we can't tell them even if we know ourselves.

That being said, the person standing there haranguing you, or the one who listened to you tell the past 5 guests the exact same thing, those definitely qualify.

What is ROTM normally down for? It is down so much. And then there was the period of a couple months with no Imohotep.

The downtime situation is the same for any attraction I have worked. The standard information communicated to the people is:

-We are experiencing technical difficulties.
-We are working to correct the problem.
-We do not know how long it will be until we re-open.
-Please enjoy another attraction in the meantime.
-Yes, we will still honor your Fastpasses.

I usually communicate this as a spiel as opposed to telling every single family to save my breath. Regardless, there are still several groups who want you to repeat everything for them or want more detail.

SG Replies/Questions after the spiel:

-So what are the "technical difficulties?" or What really happened?
-So it's going to be closed all day?
-Do you have an ETA?
-Can you trade out my fastpasses?
-We came here just to ride this. Our vacation is ruined.

Disney should just have a bunch of big plastic moose's made, with a sign saying "sorry folks..."
