True, you can get some deals on empty lots!

but if you build, they have some improved building codes for fire prevention!

For those CMs who missed the very fine, dignified, tearful Veteran's Day Flag Retreat Ceremony Tuesday - you all missed a great part of D L history. Flag Retreat was like none other!! The Color Guard was spectacular! The 4, yes 4 D L Security Officers gave pride & honor to D L as they stepped out & made not one mistake during the entire ceremony attended by over 400. Leave it to Security Officer Ernie to prepare events & present perfection! I was so proud of all in D L Security because they honored the Veterans with their hearts & souls. As a side note.... Ernie was told of a Veteran at the ceremony who had been a D L Security Officer years ago. He was so thrilled to meet the gentleman - then he was told this Veteran had been awarded The Purple Heart by Eisenhower. Nothing could have been better!! Pics were taken until they had to be escorted, due to parade, backstage where there was a small party for all Veterans & their families. Can't wait for my CD of the entire ceremony.
We love the Flag ceremony! We try to go everyday when we are there. It is so moving.

Thanks for all the info on So Cal, guys. We are not looking... quite yet. But if I get my way, we will be looking into executive rentals to get out of here and rent somewhere in California and get the heck outa Dodge. I cannot take this dry climate anymore.

We did get a dusting of snow last night. Not much, just a touch! And it looks like dry and 60's for the next week now. I just hope we do not get hit with a blizzzzzzzard at Christmas when we fly out. That happened in 06 and it was not fun, but we made it. Cold here today! In the 30's.

I am just dreaming of that beach and seeing the waves roll in. I want to take a trip to Santa Cruz soon. A good 3-4 days there would invigorate me.

We are going to have to check out those areas you all mentioned. I was also thinking about Thousand Oaks and Ventura County. I know most of the whole So Cal area with ridges and valleys are fire prone. So we want to get something that is not too far out into the fire areas.

I hear something like 77 houses have burned to the ground in the Santa Barbara area. WOW! Those are some expensive homes there. Those Santa Ana winds do a number on everything. Maybe Florida would be better for prices and fire problems. I know they had fires a ferw years ago with the drought, but it is not like the fires that happen pretty much every year in So Cal.

Oh well, just looking forward to getting to DL at Christmas and maybe trying to get a trip to Santa Cruz in the off season maybe in January or February.
I can dream...I just bought a CD of ocean waves to help me sleep at night.
I LOVE the sound of the waves. :)

If you like heat, Thousand Oaks is for you. If you really like heat, go a little further east to Simi (Steamy) Valley.

Not really. 4 years ago we had a big fire on Mt. Lemmon. The salesman that I worked with went to the county meeting to hear about the 'new' codes.
"You can build your cabins taller and closer together. As long as you use metal roofing."

They wanted everybody in town to feel sorry for the people who lost their weekend cabins. Mostly what they got was "You live in a FUCKING FOREST,forests catch fire"

Look a butterfly.

Everywhere in SoCal is HOT,I think, unless you're on the coast....That's why they invented air conditioning!
It is very expensive with the electricity in the summer, unless you're like my friend who installed the solar panels....electric bill $1.96 in the Summer months, I kid you not! Susi said she wanted to go Green.....
Of course you can do that in a nudist colony, too, and only wear a Fig leaf! ;)

Hmmm. Well now if you build, in some areas, you have to have enclosed eaves, metal or cement tile roof, fire resistant siding, house sprinkler system Inside/outside, water storage tank, and so on, not to mention 100 to 200 foot defenseable space.

In San Diego, a local reporter was covering the fires, and had the horror of watching his own home go up in flames, as he was reporting it. The fire crew he was with could not save it.

He has been doing follow up reports (from his burnt out foundation) about insurance, and building codes and so forth. One of the interesting things is that the house was about 18 years old, and that to replace it, (to current standards) it would cost almost twice as much.

very sad.

Ya gotta review home insurance policies every year. I hadn't for a while and discovered this year the insurance would cover maybe 40% of the replacement value.

It took about an hour on the phone answering a lot of questions but in the end the insurance company upped the coverage. Down side was the premium jumped about $1000.

Know what you mean, we switched to "replacement cost and 125% of furnishings!)

(That way we could go to DLR and WDW an buy all the missing stuff!! hehehehehehe)
