Assuming you don't want to drop over $100 on a bottle, stick to a single malt scotch of at least 12 years old with a name you can't pronounce. This should get you on their good side. A Macallan 12 or Glenmorangie 15 should earn respect. Ask the shopkeep for pricing lest you look like an ass when he pulls down a dusty $300 bottle and you don't like your host that much. I flat out tell them "something old and really good in the $50 range, high quality at a value price." After once buying a $200 bottle of vinegar (labeled champagne) I never spent over $50 on booze again.
