Yup. Luigi's Flying Tires was inspired by the original Flying Saucers ride.

Hopefully the technology will be better this time around. If I remember correctly,the valves under the sausers were from the Apollo/Saturn 5 main stage. They were fuel valves that had to work only once,but NASA would cycle them something like 10,000 times. When Disney sent some of the failed valves back to NASA,they determined the they had been through over 1,000,000 cycles. Or something like that,I may be off a 0 or 2.

I'm sorry for bumping this thread back up, but I thought it was worth mentioning the following;

As far as DL getting the PeopleMover back, at the Destination D event last month, DL president George Kalogridis said that if the PeopleMover ever came back, it would never be the same; new regulations would require staircases be built every several feet of the track, which in his opinion as well as the DL management, would detract from Tomorrowland's sleek design. Plus, the would need to widen the existing track significantly to conform to safety laws. But he did leave a glimmer of hope, the fact that they have kept the track in place, meaning that there is still an interest in it.

Oh, and I have one more thing to say in response to IndyandMarion--

While it is certainly understandable that you are bitter and upset at Disney right now, keep in mind that the Disneyland management and the WDW management are separate and are not the same group. I was praising the current Disneyland management, they had nothing to do with your situation.
Rest assured though, I am very sorry about what happened to you. :(

Eh, I would not enjoy staircases every so many feet. Bleh. And imagine the track over the sub lagoon? It'd be so clunky looking.

Sorry for my late response, and for bringing this thread back up, but yes, I agree, it would be pretty awkward looking.

Still, hopefully someday the Peoplemover will return to Disneyland.

The Tron sequel is bringing back some fond memories of the Peoplemover to me. On my first trip to DL in '82 -- my first visit to a Disney park ever -- they were heavily promoting Tron at the time, and the Peoplemover had a segment were you passed through a tunnel where the walls had projected images of the computer grids whizzing past, so it felt like you were in the Tron world.

I rode it three times. :D:
