it was on 9-11-2001, and it made a bunch of us rather busy.
Ah, yeah that would have done it for me. I worked that day, well, I went into the office. Not much got done.

I never get paid when work calls me at home either. Though I must say, they always call with the really weird questions, which sort of makes it worth it.
Last week I got a call from CRO. Somebody there needed to know how many of each coupon type was in the "7 Adventure Ticket Book" in 1971.
In case anyone else cares, it's one each of A, B, C, and D coupons, and 3 E coupons.
OTOH, it's really nice to hear them apologizing all over themselves and saying, "Sorry to call you at home, but everyone else I asked said, 'Zazu would know!'"

I still get those type of calls and emails from the folks who laid me off (along with all of tech services) last year.

better yet, tell them your consultation fee is $100.00 per question, ten question minimum!

Oddly enough, I do care. Not much, mind you, just in the "Well, that's kind of neat to know" way, but...

I have receive phone calls from work while I am on vacation. Last Oct, my department called asking what heat level is good to heat food in the :) warmer and if we put water inside.
Level 5.5 and no water.
I spent a few days traveling back and forth to DLH. They got the best cell phone coverage. When I got back home, the phone coverage was 1/2 a bar compaired to 4 bars. :)

I got one of those calls once. It was from a secret government lab where I had been let go over a year earlier. It came at 3am, so I wasn't all that happy to be talking to them anyway.
"Sir, there has been a fire in the lab."
"So what?
"Um, sir, I said, 'There has been a fire in the lab.'"
"I heard you the first time, I just don't much care at 3am. Call the fire department."
"But sir..."
"Look damnit, this is not freaking 'Andromeda Strain', I was let go over a year ago, I no longer know what's in that lab, and don't have the security clearance to get on base anyway. I say, 'Let it freaking burn!'"
"But, but..."

Most satisfying phone call since the one that told me I'd gotten that job.

Sounds like a literal "burn the bridges" goodbye. I did that once after getting laid off. One of the most satisfying things I've ever done. Had the admins in stitches and my "manager" sputtering incomphrensibly.
